Bloomsburg University Women’s Soccer Tabbed Eighth In PSAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll

Bloomsburg University women's soccer team has been picked to finish eighth
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team has been picked to finish eighth according to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Preseason Coaches' Poll which was released on Tuesday.

West Chester received only three first-place votes but was picked to win the conference. East Stroudsburg, the defending PSAC Champions and Atlantic Regional Champions, earned eight first-place nods and was picked to finish second. Slippery Rock collected two first-place votes and was predicted third while Gannon, last year's PSAC regular-season champions, earned three first-place votes and was picked fourth. Kutztown rounded out the top five.

The Huskies finished eighth in the regular season standings last year after posting an 11-7-1 overall record and a 9-6-1 mark in conference play. Seeded eighth in the PSAC Tournament, the Huskies drew top-seeded, and top-ranked, Gannon in the opening round of the postseason and dropped a 3-1 decision to close out the year.

The 11 victories last season marked the most by a Bloomsburg squad since the 2010 Huskies won 13 games and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, head coach Matt Haney, who will be entering his second season as the Huskies' boss, posted the second-highest total for victories for a first-year head coach in program history (Sandy Dickson went 16-1-4 in 1998).

Bloomsburg will enter the 2016 season with a revamped roster as 13 newcomers will put on the Huskies' uniform for the first time. The 13 newcomers will be asked to help fill the void left by 11 players who departed from last year's team. Among those gone this season is Chrissy Hollan (Laurys Station/Parkland)who was a 2015 Second Team CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors Association) Academic All-American; a PSAC Fall Top 10 winner; and was named First Team All-PSAC, First Team All-Atlantic Region by the NCAA Division II CCA (Conference Commissioners' Association), and Second Team All-Region by the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America).

However, despite the high turnover, the Huskies have plenty returning to give the team a shot at the postseason. Expected to help lead the way are senior Jenna Fisher (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) and sophomore Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area). Fisher has been an All-PSAC Third Team selection in each of her first three seasons with the Huskies. She totaled seven points last season and has 13 goals and seven assists for 33 points in her career. Meanwhile, Barber had a sensational rookie season a year ago and was named to the All-PSAC Third Team. She led Bloomsburg with seven goals and four assists for 18 points.

Also back is sophomore goalkeeper Devon Haviland (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) who led the PSAC with nine shutouts last season as a rookie. She was 11-6-1 with a 1.07 goals against average. She ranked seventh in the PSAC in goals against average (1.07) and ninth in the league in save percentage (.781).

The Huskies will jump right into league play to open the season as they will travel to PSAC preseason favorite, West Chester, on Thursday, September 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Bloomsburg's first home match will be on Saturday, September 3 against Millersville at Steph Pettit Stadium. Start time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
