Huskies Field Hockey Picked Sixth In PSAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll

Bloomsburg University field hockey team has been picked to finish sixth
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University field hockey team has been picked to finish sixth according to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Preseason Coaches' Poll released on Wednesday morning.

The defending national champions from East Stroudsburg were picked to win the conference in 2016 after garnering seven of the eleven first-place votes. Co-PSAC regular season champions, Millersville, was picked to finish second despite not receiving a single first-place nod. West Chester earned three first-place votes and was picked third while Shippensburg received the other first-place vote and came in fourth. Kutztown rounded out the top five.

The Huskies finished last season with a 10-10 overall record and a 5-5 mark in league play under head coach Nikki Rhoads. Bloomsburg entered the PSAC Tournament as the sixth seed and earned a 3-2 overtime victory over third-seeded Shippensburg in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament before falling to second-seed Millersville, 1-0, in the semifinals to end the season.

Rhoads will be entering her seventh season as the head coach of the Huskies in 2016. She has guided the perennial power to an 82-36 overall record and a 42-20 mark against league opponents. Bloomsburg has made the PSAC Tournament in five of her first six seasons and has made the NCAA playoffs twice during her tenure.

Bloomsburg has the benefit of returning senior goalkeeper Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin). Cassel, who was a Second Team All-American and a Second Team All-PSAC member last season, led the PSAC with an .835 save percentage and ranked fourth in the league with a 1.32 goals against average. She also posted five shutouts and averaged 6.85 saves per game – both third in the conference.

Also returning are seniors Sam Peters (Harrisburg, Pa./Mifflin County) and Alexis Carroll (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South), both of whom captured Third Team All-PSAC accolades a year ago. Peters led the Huskies with seven goals and two assists for 16 points last season and has 15 goals and six assists for 36 points in her first three seasons. Carroll, a defender, was an integral part of limiting opponents to just 27 goals in 20 games a year ago.

Carroll was also a Third Team All-PSAC selection in 2014 while last season's honor for Peters was the first of her career.

Bloomsburg will open the 2016 regular season on Friday, September 2 with a trip to non-conference opponent, Adelphi University. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The Huskies' first home match of the season will be on Tuesday, September 6 against East Stroudsburg at Steph Pettit Stadium. Start time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
