Lycoming College Art Gallery to showcase graphic designs of commercial artist

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A retrospective of commercial artwork of the late graphic designer Stuart Samuels ’54 will be exhibited in the Lycoming College Art Gallery in downtown Williamsport from Oct. 21 through Nov. 19. A reception will be held Oct. 21 and his wife, Ruth Samuels, will offer remarks at 5:30 p.m. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

Samuels’ “Design Retrospective” starts with paintings created at Lycoming College and progresses to Samuels’ award-winning design work for Fortune 500 companies. The exhibition covers hand-drafted, as well as computer-designed graphics, for a range of companies including Bethlehem Steel, Command and Ponce. His skill at producing striking visuals for packaging, brochures and ads earned him scores of awards for excellence from distinguished organizations such as the Philadelphia Art Directors Club.

After graduating from Lycoming College with a degree in painting, Samuels worked as a graphic artist for 54 years, opening his own studio in 1974. Working initially in Philadelphia and later in Florida, Samuels kept pace as the graphic arts industry evolved from drawing board to computer generated design. He was regarded as one of the region’s most valued commercial designers, maintaining Fortune 500 accounts for decades in a highly competitive field.

Stuart’s work was influenced by his wife, Ruth Samuels, who helped shape his career and organized this retrospective.

His exhibit was curated by commercial designer alumna Briana (Lewis) Hassibi ’01. His show runs concurrently with the exhibit by Pedro Lasch.

Hours for the Lycoming College Art Gallery, located at 25 W. Fourth Street in Williamsport, are: Wednesday - Friday, 4-8 p.m., 4-9 p.m. on the first Friday of every month, and Saturday 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5-9 p.m. For more information, please visit the Lycoming College Art Gallery webpage at or send an email
