Widener Football - Underdog Role a Matter of Pride

By Terry Toohey - Delaware County Daily Times
CHESTER, Pa. – Widener linebacker Steve Gozur does not mind that the football coaches in the Middle Atlantic Conference picked the Pride to finish fourth this year.
The same thing happened two years ago and the Pride exceeded those preseason expectations. Widener won the league title and advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals before falling to Linfield, Ore.
Gozur and his teammates would not mind a repeat.
"Not at all," the senior from North Penn said. "We're going into this season with that same mentality we had before that season. Sure, we would like to be picked first, but we also like being the underdog. It adds a little fuel to our fire."

And the Pride would like nothing better than to get off to a good start with a win over Rowan in the season opener Saturday at Quick Stadium.
"We know it's going to be a physical game and one that will be close," Gozur said.
"Rowan's a good team," senior offensive tackle Stephen Domonoski added. "It's an opportunity to show everyone what we can do."
This is the third straight year the Pride and the Profs have kicked off the season. Widener won the first meeting and Rowan got even a year ago.
"It's a great opener," Widener head coach Mike Kelly said. "I'd love to go out and buy a win, but for the region, this is as good a small college football game you're going to see anywhere in the country. Look at the history of the two programs. Check out our roster. Look at how many South Jersey kids we have on our team.
"Our players know their players and vice versa. I have tremendous respect for (Rowan coach) Jay Accorsi. He and I get along together very well. We sit together every week at the (small college) luncheons. I think this game is everything college football is supposed to be about. If someone has never seen a game at this level, it's worth coming out to see just how hard these kids play."
