Cougars Williams, Ground Game Lead to Big Win Over Wilkes

The Misericordia University football team ran for nearly 400 yards en route to its first win of the season with a 43-14 victory over Wilkes, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.

Brady Williams ran for 218 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 174 yards and two more scores.

Clayton Vleck had 91 yards rushing and a touchdown and Mark Raineyadded 82 yards, including a TD.

Rainey added a touchdown reception as did Isaiah Williams, who had a team-high six catches for 71 yards.

Not to be out done, the MU defense allowed just one score while nabbing four interceptions. Tyler Collins had a team-high 13 tackles and Mike Love and Nick Yeager both had seven.

Vince Maldonado had an interception and two pass breakups while Matt Martin, Collins and Fredo Santorellli all added picks.

After Wilkes took the opening kickoff and marched 70 yards to take a 7-0 lead, the Cougars defense pitched a shutout the rest of the way.

The Cougars answered with an impressive drive of their own, but came up empty.

On MU's second play from scrimmage, Brady Williams took a keeper up the middle, cut to his left and raced 41 yards to the Wilkes 29 yard line. Vleck rumbled for six yards to the 23 and after a holding penalty, the Cougars eventually faced fourth-and-nine where a Wilkes defender made a leaping interception on the one yard line.

After forcing a punt, the Cougars took over on their own 22 and Williams cut right on a quarterback draw to gain 26 yards to near midfield. Rainey picked five yards into Wilkes territory and Williams scrambled for a 26-yard gain to the Wilkes 20.

Rainey picked up eight yards on second down and Williams went up the middle to set up first-and-goal at the nine. With Williams avoiding pressure, Rainey slipped out of the backfield and hauled in a nine-yard scoring strike across the middle with 2:08 left in the first quarter.

The PAT failed and the Cougars trailed 7-6.

The MU defense forced a three-and-out, but the Colonels took advantage when Williams arm was hit on a pass near midfield and took the interception back 40 yards for a score and a 14-6 lead.

Starting at their own 25 yard line following an illegal block on the kickoff, the Cougars went 75 yards in eight plays to score their second touchdown.

Brady Williams went up the middle and cut to his left for 14 yards to the 43 yard line. Isaiah Williams took a quick out on the right sideline for eight yards and Brady Williams went 22 yards off left tackle to the Wilkes 27.

Rainey gained six yards on first down and Brady Williams faked a QB draw before connecting with Isaiah Williams for 16 yards across the middle to the five.
On second-and-goal, Brady Williams rolled right and cut back behind a lone defender and into the end zone. The two-point attempt failed and the Cougars trailed 14-12 with 9:42 to go in the second quarter.

The Cougars took their first lead late in the second quarter.

Isaiah Williams took a quick screen down the right sideline for a 19 yard gain to the Wilkes 34 yard line. Vleck picked up six yards on first down and Brady Williams went off left tackle for five yards on third-and-one for a first down at the Wilkes 20.

Out of a timeout, Isaiah Williams took a quick slant 20 yards for the score and a 19-14 lead with less than a minute to play in the first half.

Wilkes put together a last-minute drive, but Collins ended the threat with an interception at the one yard line.

Wilkes attempted an onside kick to open the second half, but kick catching interference penalty gave MU the ball at the Wilkes 29.

Klayton Kelly's nine-yard slant converted a third-and-five for a first down at the Wilkes 15. The drive stalled at the nine and Ryan Davis gave the Cougars a 22-14 lead with a 26-yard field goal.

The teams exchanged punts on the next two possessions before Wilkes used six completions to set up first-and-goal at the Misericordia two.
Vince Maldonado came up with an interception on second down to give the Cougars the ball at their own four.

Rainey gained seven yards on first down and went around the left end for 10 yards on third-and-one. A personal foul on the Colonels moved the ball to the MU 38.
Kelly made a leaping grab across the middle for a 31 yards to the Wilkes 34. Williams went up the middle for six yards on first down and went off left tackle and cut back to go 28 yards for a TD on second down. Davis' PAT made it 29-14 with 2:55 to go in the third period.

Following an MU pooch punt midway through the fourth quarter gave Wilkes the Ball deep in their own end, Santorelli's interception at the line of scrimmage gave the ball back to the Cougars at the Wilkes 15. Rainey went 10 yards on first down and eventually plunged in from the one for a 36-14 lead with 7:03 remaining.

MU regained possession with less than five minutes to play thanks to Martin's open field tackle on a fourth-down Wilkes reception.

Vleck took the third of his three straight carries up the middle for 38 yards and a 43-14 lead.
