WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Mike Ward (Edgewater, Md./South River) finished with 12 tackles and two breakups and junior D.J. Boyd (Seat Pleasant, Md./District Heights) posted six tackles, two for loss, a breakup and a fumble recovery to lead the Lycoming College football team, but 12th-ranked Delaware Valley allowed just 82 yards of total offense in a 35-3 win in the Middle Atlantic Conference opener for both teams at David Person Field on Saturday, Sept. 9.
The Warrior offense gained 13 yards rushing and 69 passing against a tough Aggie defense, while the Aggies (2-0 overall, 1-0 MAC) finished with 477 yards of total offense, racking up 301 yards on the ground. The Warriors (0-2 overall, 0-1 MAC) finished with three first downs in the game.
After Delaware Valley scored two first-quarter touchdowns, the Warriors answered by taking advantage of an Aggie turnover. Junior Connor Bell (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) booted a punt to the 26-yard line and the ball was fumbled, allowing Boyd to fall on it. Three plays later, sophomore Jamie Fisher (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) drilled a 43-yard field goal with 12:26 left in the half.
The Warrior defense was able to keep the Warriors in the game until the Aggie’s second drive of the third quarter, when Devauntey Ellis scored from three yards out after the drive was kept alive by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that helped the Aggies avoid a fourth-and-10. The Aggies scored on their next two drives as well to put the game in hand.
Senior Chase Williams (Damascus, Md./Damascus) finished 8-of-18 for 35 yards and senior Collin Wright (Secane, Pa./Ridley) went 7-of-14 for 34 yards. Sophomore Dante Gipson (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) finished with five rushes for 20 yards and five catches for 27 yards. Junior Brock Zollicoffer (Owings Mills, Md./Owings Mills) added four catches for 16 yards.
Ward tied his career-high with 13 tackles, as 12 came in solo variety. Senior Aaron Davis (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) added seven tackles and senior Adin Hines (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) finished with six tackles, 2.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks. Junior Sam Romanofsky (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) added 0.5 sacks and three stops.
Devauntey Ellis led the Aggies, rushing 22 times for 172 yards and two scores and Dashawn Darden finished 16-of-29 passing for 169 yards and two scores. Marquis Ellis led the Aggie receivers with four catches for 54 yards and a score.
Michael Ockimey led the Aggies defensively with two sacks and a forced fumble and Nick Wright finished with three tackles, a sack, an interception and a breakup.
Lycoming gets back on the field on Saturday, Sept. 16, when they host Albright College at 1 p.m. at David Person Field in another MAC game.
