PREVIEW: #8 Field Hockey Set For Showdown With #1 Shippensburg Saturday

The Huskies will be looking for the program's first 4-0 start since the 2012 season when they entertain PSAC-rival and defending national champion Shippensburg University in a battle of two top-ten teams according to the preseason Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) rankings released last week. Bloomsburg, eighth in the country, is off to a 3-0 start and has outscored its opponents by a 19-3 margin. Shippensburg, the top-ranked team in the country, is 2-1 and has outscored its opponents, 10-3.

Bloomsburg leads the all-time series against Shippensburg, 45-19-1. Last season, the Raiders defeated the Huskies on penalty strokes after playing 100 minutes of scoreless action at Steph Pettit Stadium. It marked the second straight year that the matchup was settled in penalty strokes.

Head coach Nikki Rhoads is in her eighth season as the head coach of the Huskies and is just three wins away from becoming the second coach in program history to reach 100 career victories. Rhoads has a career record of 97-43 as the Bloomsburg head coach and trails only legendary coach, Jan Hutchinson, in career wins at the school.

Bloomsburg scored four second-half goals to break open a 1-0 halftime advantage en route to a 5-1 victory over tenth-ranked Adelphi University on Tuesday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium. Senior MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) and sophomore Willow Perkins (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia)paced the Huskies' offense with a goal and an assist each while sophomore Tesa Hoffman (Freeburg, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) was credited with a pair of helpers. Juniors Brooke Zeiders(Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area), Abby Sauder (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal), and Erica Krebs (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) also scored for Bloomsburg in the victory.

Shippensburg suffered its first loss of the season in a showdown at second-ranked East Stroudsburg on Wednesday. The Raiders outshot the Warriors, 16-9, but ultimately fell by a 2-0 final. Ally Mooney stopped two shots in the loss.

The Huskies enter Saturday's contest with a 3-0 record, having outscored their opponents by a 19-3 margin. With a victory on Saturday, it would mark the program's first 4-0 start since the 2012 season. Bloomsburg has scored at least five times in all three games and it currently leads the PSAC in scoring average (6.33). Bloomsburg also has a significant edge in shots as it is outshooting its opponents, 78-14, through the first three contests. Junior Brooke Zeiders (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) leads the team in scoring with four goals and two assists for ten points. She has scored at least one goal in all three games. Junior Abby Sauder (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) has four goals for eight points and has also scored at least once in all three contests. Senior MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area), who has a single goal in all three games to date, has three goals and two assists for eight points. In goal, freshman Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) is 3-0 with a 1.07 goals against average. She has only needed to make three saves in three games. Freshman Hannah Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) split the shutout win last Sunday against Newberry and has not allowed a goal in 13:25 of action.

The Raiders enter the contest with a 2-1 overall record but have outscored their opponents by a 10-3 margin. They also hold a 107-18 advantage in shots through three contests. Emily Barnard leads the Raiders in scoring with four goals for eight points. Rebecca Bouyea has three goals for six points while Jazmin Petrantonio has a goal and three assists for five points. Aerin Kolfoort and Megan Green have also scored this season. In goal, Ally Mooney has started all three games and is 2-1 with a 1.15 goals against average. She has made eight saves on the season.

Bloomsburg will square off against its third consecutive ranked opponent when it travels to seventh-ranked West Chester on Tuesday, September 12. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
