Soccer - Oliverio’s Goal Lifts Wilkes Women’s Soccer to 1-0 Win over William Paterson

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women’s soccer team remained undefeated on the season with a strong defensive effort on Wednesday night at Schmidt Stadium in a 1-0 win against William Paterson University.

Micaela Oliverio provided the goal early in the second half and Courtney Stanley recorded her first career shutout victory in goal for Wilkes (3-0-1).

The Lady Colonels controlled the majority of the ball in the first half and held an 8-1 shot advantage over William Paterson (3-2-0) but the game remained scoreless.

That changed just 1:03 into the second half when Oliverio beat a couple of defenders down the left side of the box and placed a nice shot into the back of the Pioneers goal. It was the senior’s first goal of the season and the 14th of her career.

Wilkes had a couple of opportunities to extend the lead but shots by Catherine Gregoire and Dianna Connor went just over the crossbar in the 57th and 79th minutes.

A strong defensive effort was turned in by the Lady Colonels in front of Stanley to help stake down the first shutout of the season for Wilkes. Gregoire, Shelby Trumbo, Megan Lercara, Elena Denger, Julia Tyler, and Niamh Harkins all had good games on defense along with the Wilkes midfield contingent which tracked back well. Stanley made one save in the contest.

For the game, the Lady Colonels outshot the Pioneers 16-5 and had a 7-1 advantage in shots-on-goal. Wilkes also had 10 corners to only four for William Paterson.

The Lady Colonels continue non-conference play when they face Penn College on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
