Wilkes Field Hockey Drops Season Opener 4-3 in OT

SELINSGROVE, PA – The Wilkes University field hockey team came from behind twice during its season opening match but eventually fell 4-3 in overtime to host Susquehanna University on Saturday afternoon in the Connie Harnum Classic at Sassafras Field.

After falling behind 2-0 by the 16:30 mark of the first half Wilkes (0-1) fought back to even the score by the break.

Freshman defender Zoe Stepanski scored the first goal for the Lady Colonels at the 30:57 mark with Megan Kane providing the assist. Then, right at the end of the first half, Wilkes found the equalizing goal when Keighlyn Oliver scored on an assist from Kayla Gronkowski.

Susquehanna (1-0) would regain the lead early in the second half on a goal by Hunter Pitman but another comeback was in the cards for Wilkes.

With just over 10 minutes left in the second half Kane found the back of the cage to tie the score at three. Ali Dunn provided the assist for her first career point.

Pitman handed the River Hawks the victory 1:11 into the overtime period with her second goal of the game.

Dallas Kendra made five saves for Wilkes.

Susquehanna held the slight edge in shots with a 14-13 advantage but led 9-4 in shots on goal. They also held the 8-7 advantage in penalty corners for the game.

Wilkes played the game without three-time First Team All-Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom selection Marissa Surdy.

The Lady Colonels will return to the field in Selinsgrove to face Ithaca College in the consolation game of the Connie Harnum Classic at 12:00 p.m. Sunday, September 3.
