Wilkes Women’s Soccer Earns First Win of Season over Muhlenberg 2-1

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women’s soccer team earned its first victory of the 2017 season after defeating Muhlenberg College 2-1 at Schmidt Stadium on Monday evening.

The Lady Colonels improved to 1-0-1 on the young season with the win.

Muhlenberg came out with offensive pressure through the first 10 minutes, securing the first scoring chance of the game in the 11th minute but junior Megan Lercara came through with a key defensive save to keep the score tied at zero.

Senior Dianna Connor gave the Wilkes its first lead of the season in the 23rd minute when she took a through ball from Lercara and lined a shot into the lower left corner for her first goal of the season.

Senior Elena Denger doubled the lead in the 36th minute when junior Nicole Harmer lofted a crossing pass from the lower left to the lower right and Denger headed it back across to the lower left post for her first goal of the season.

The Lady Colonels had the first scoring opportunity of the second half in the 51st minute when junior Nicolette Towlen and Connor raced up the middle of the field and Towlen left a perfect drop pass for Connor who tried to loft it over the keeper, hitting the post. Towlen followed with a header but left it just wide left.

The Mules cut the lead in half with an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute.

Junior Emily Wirth came close to regaining the two goal lead for Wilkes, taking a pass from Towlen and putting a laser towards the top right corner, but Muhlenberg’s keeper made the save to keep the Lady Colonels lead at one.

The Lady Colonel defense stifled Muhlenberg for the remainder of the match, allowing just three shots over the final 38 minutes.

Junior Courtney Stanley made four saves to earn her first career victory.

Wilkes returns to the field on Saturday when it will travel to Marywood for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game.
