Wilkes Women's Volleyball Takes Set from Eastern Falling 3-1 in MAC Freedom Opener

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women’s volleyball team opened its 2017 MAC Freedom schedule falling 3-1 against visiting Eastern University Wednesday night in the Marts Center. Wilkes dropped the first two sets 25-5 and 25-19 before taking the third set 25-23. It marked the first time Eastern has dropped a set in conference play since October 1, 2014 when the Eagles lost a set in a 3-1 win against DeSales. Eastern then clinched the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.

Wilkes falls to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in MAC Freedom matches. Eastern, the defending MAC Freedom champion, improves to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Wilkes stormed out to a 5-1 lead in the third set thanks to kills from Alex Ferrier and Madison Scarfaro. Two Eastern attack errors kept the Lady Colonels out front 8-2. The Eagles then used a 13-6 run to take its first lead of the set up 15-14 following an Alexis Morgan ball handling error. Wilkes fought back using a service ace from Morgan and kills from Jamey Mikovich and Ferrier to take a 24-23 lead. Mikovich finished off the win with a kill off a Morgan assist on the ensuing play handing the Eagles their first set loss in conference play in almost three years.

The fourth set went back-and-forth as Wilkes held a 17-16 advantage when Scarfaro put home a Mikovich assist. Eastern then rattled off the next four points of the set and finished off the Lady Colonels with a kill on the final point of the match.

Mikovich led all Wilkes hitters with eight kills and 14 digs. Ferrier followed with seven kills and one service ace. Morgan was stellar in the passing game finishing with 18 assists and three kills. Juliet Betke anchored the backline with 14 digs.

Caroline Shelby topped Eastern with a match-high 19 kills and nine digs. Ally Spillane followed with 14 kills while Kylie McCusker contributed 48 assists on 55 Eagle kills in the conference win.

Wilkes takes to the road Saturday for two non-conference matches against Penn State Berks and Immaculata University starting at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
