Six Named All-MAC Freedom from Wilkes Women's Soccer; Sumoski Named Coach of the Year

ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Wilkes University women's soccer team had six players named to the 2017 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) All-Conference team as announced by the conference office this morning.

Elena Denger, Nicolette Towlen, and Niamh Harkins were named First-Team All-MAC Freedom while Elise Brubaker, Catherine Gregoire, and Courtney Stanley were selected Second Team All-MAC Freedom. Head coach John Sumoski was named the MAC Freedom Coach of the Year.

The six Wilkes selections were the most for the program since 2012 when seven Lady Colonels were selected.

Denger earned her third All-Conference selection and received First Team honors for the first time after being a Second Team selection her sophomore and junior seasons. Denger recorded a career-high six points on two goals and two assists playing a wing back role this season. She was named MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III North Defensive Player of the Week on October 2nd and 3rdrespectively.

Towlen, a junior, was named to her first All-Conference team earning a First Team nod. In the regular season she used her speed up top to threaten opponent's backlines on a consistent basis and scored three goals while tallying one assist. Towlen added a fourth game-winning goal on Tuesday night to send Wilkes past Eastern in double overtime and into Saturday's MAC Freedom Championship game. Towlen has 30 career points on 10 goals and 10 assists.

Harkins became the seventh Lady Colonels freshman to be selected First Team All-Conference and the first since 2012. She helped anchor a defensive unit that racked up 10 regular season shutouts and ranked first in the MAC Freedom in goals allowed. Harkins was named the MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week on October 30th.

Brubaker was a key contributor for the Lady Colonels during her freshman season both offensively and defensively from the center midfield position and was recognized on the Second Team. In the regular season she earned 14 starts in 17 games and recorded two assists and the game-winning goal at Manhattanville in the regular-season finale to clinch the No. 1 seed in the MAC Freedom Tournament.

Gregoire brought the tally of freshmen on the All-Conference team to three with her Second Team selection. Steady play all season on the backline helped Wilkes shut down its opponents to the tune of 10 goals in 17 regular season games. Gregoire's two goals this season came in big spots for Wilkes as she scored in her first collegiate game to help the Lady Colonels tie No. 19 Penn State Berks to open the season and she scored the game-tying goal in the regular-season finale against Manhattanville.

Stanley stepped into the starting goalkeeper role to begin her junior season and led the MAC Freedom in regular season goals against average (.571) and shutouts (9) to earn Second Team recognition. She was named the MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week on September 25th and with her MAC Freedom Semifinal shutout against Eastern she moved into first on the single-season shutout list at Wilkes and into a tie for third on the career list with 10. She also is the current leader in career goals against average with a .700 mark.

Sumoski earned his fourth Coach of the Year award after previously being named Freedom Conference Coach of the Year in 2002, 2004, and 2012. He reached at least 12 wins for the sixth time in his 16 seasons at the head of the program. Sumoski led the Lady Colonels to the program's first No. 1 seed in the MAC Freedom Tournament and into the MAC Freedom Championship game for the fourth time as Wilkes will square off with No. 2 seed Misericordia at 5:00 p.m. Saturday at Schmidt Stadium.
