Wilkes Cross Country Teams Set for NCAA Mideast Regional

WILKES-BARRE -- Members of the Wilkes University men's and women's cross country teams will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championship when both squads compete in the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships Saturday at Big Spring High School in Newville, Pa. hosted by Dickinson College.

With teams limited to seven entrants, a total of 14 Wilkes men and women will compete in the event. The men's 8k race will start first at 11:00 a.m. followed by the women's 6k at 12:15 p.m. Seven Lady Colonels will make entries into the race including Moriah Teed, Autumn Pedron, Kaitlin Sutton, Kaitlyn Sitch, Carmen Hillman, Faith Jensen and Caroline Rickard.

Leading the Colonels will be sophomore Franco Balbuena, who earned Third Team All-MAC honors after finishing 23rd two weeks ago. In just two years, Balbuena owns the top five times in program history including the fourth best set this season (27:26) set at the Dickinson Long/Short Invitational.

Joining Balbuena as Wilkes entries will be Alan Sebastianelli, Kevin Long, Kevin Singhel, Noah Molina, Kendrick Schell and Ryan Weber.

Tournament Notes:

- Top 7 individuals (non-team qualifying athletes) qualify for nationals

- Teams - Top 2 receives automatic bids. NCAA selects at large bids on Sunday. Typically, 4 or 5 teams in the Mid-East Region have been selected.

- The initial Top 7 individuals will be announced Saturday; however, additional individuals may qualify for Nationals on Sunday when the at-large bids are announced.

- Top 35 individuals will be announced as All Regional Team

- Top 7 freshmen will be announced as All Freshmen Regional Team
