Men's Basketball - Lycoming Warriors top New Paltz in Lou Basinger Tournament opener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Leading by as many as 28 points in the first half, the ninth-ranked Lycoming College men’s basketball team doubled-up SUNY New Paltz at the break and held a comfortable lead the rest of the way as it routed New Paltz, 89-68, on Friday evening, Dec. 29, in the opening game of the Louis Fleming Basinger Tournament at Lamade Gym.


Playing just 17 minutes, senior Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) led the Warriors (12-0 overall) with a game-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. He also had two rebounds and two steals. Leading a bench that produced 57 points, junior Calvin Chandler (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) added 12 points and six rebounds, as the team equaled its best start and longest winning streak in school history with the 2011-12 team.

After scoring the opening bucket on a 3-pointer, Lycoming led for the final 38:48 and quickly grew its lead to double-digits on a 3-pointer from freshman Darius Dangerfield (Abingdon, Md./Hartford Tech) to make it 22-12 with 12:52 remaining. New Paltz cut the lead down to six a minute later but a layup from Wallace made it 26-16 and the Warriors led by double-digits the rest of the way, leading by as many 28 points in the first half on a steal and fast break layup from Chandler with 1:17 left. Lycoming ended the first half on a 22-7 run to lead 54-27 at the break.

Lycoming extended its lead early in the second half to 29 and the closest the game got the rest of the way was 18 as all 14 Warriors factored into the scoring column.

The Warriors held New Paltz to 31 percent from the field in the first half and 39 percent overall, while Lycoming hit more than 47 percent of its shots in the first half and 42 percent in the game. Lycoming forced 23 turnovers that turned into 27 points and held a 47-34 rebounding advantage.

Freshman Ramadan Jennings (Jackson, Ohio/Life Skills) totaled seven points and a game-high eight rebounds off the bench while Dangerfield added eight points, a career-high seven assists and three rebounds with just one turnover. Senior Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) had eight points, two assists and a block in just six minutes of action and sophomore Damani Myers (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Mary’s) had four points, four rebounds and four assists to give him 100 in his career. Sophomore Devon Taylor (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) had a career-high nine points and three rebounds off the bench.

Tristan Wissemann led New Paltz with 13 points and three blocks, while Dylan Balducci had 13 points off the bench.

The Warriors return to action in the championship game of the Louis Fleming Basinger Tournament against the winner of the tournament’s late game between King’s (Pa.) and Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, Dec. 30, at 3 p.m.
