Second-half run leads Warriors over York

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – After York College cut an 18-point lead down to two midway through the second half, the ninth-ranked Lycoming College men’s basketball team countered with a 12-2 run to retake a double-digit lead as Lycoming earned a hard-fought 75-67 win over the CUNYAC school in the non-conference action on Saturday, Dec. 16, at Lamade Gym.

Senior Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) led the Warriors with 20 points and eight rebounds and two steals, finishing the game just three points shy of becoming the 30th Warrior to score 1,000 career points. Senior Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) added nine points and two rebounds and junior T.J. Duckett (Severna Park, Md./Calvert Hall) added nine points, three rebounds and two assists, as he hit 3-of-6 3-pointers.

After going ahead by double figures late in the first half, Lycoming (10-0 overall) came out in the second and extended its lead to 18, but over the next seven minutes, York (3-6 overall) got the deficit all the way down to two as it went on an 18-2 run. Jumpstarted by a 3-pointer from sophomore Ronald Jefferson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King), the Warriors were able to regain control. A steal and dunk from junior Darius James (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) grew the lead to 11 and the closest York was able to get the rest of the way was eight points in the final 10 seconds.

Falling behind 22-14 midway through the first half, Lycoming ended the period on a 28-6 run to take a 41-28 lead into the break. In the final six minutes, York was held to just one point as the Warriors built their first double-digit lead. Wallace scored 14 of his 20 points while hitting 6-of-7 shots in the half to lead the team.

Lycoming held a 36-14 advantage in points in the paint while it forced 28 turnovers that led to 24 points. It also received 32 points from its bench compared to 10 from York’s.

Darin Dove led York with 20 points and eight rebounds while Ryan Smart had 12 points and five rebounds.
