Wrestling - Huskies Take Eighth at PSAC Championships

EDINBORO, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University wrestling team took eighth place at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships with 43.5 team points on Saturday (Dec. 9) at Edinboro University's McComb Fieldhouse. No. 24/18 Lock Haven captured the title with 156 team points. The Huskies had three placers in Andy Schutz (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) at 133 pounds, Kyle Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) at 174 pounds and Bruce Graeber (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) at 285 pounds.

Andy Schutz (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) reached the finals at 133 pounds, after taking out Rodney Sunday of Seton Hill by fall in 1:26 to open the day. In his semifinal match, Schutz defeated a familiar foe in Lock Haven's DJ Fehlman by decision 3-2 to reach the finals. That set up the final between Schutz and No. 12 Korbin Myers of Edinboro. Myers won the title by decision 6-2. Schutz's day earned his team 15.00 points.

Kyle Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) placed fourth at 174 pounds, earning 10.50 points. Murphy dropped his first match of the day 7-6 in the second tiebreaker to Taylor Cahill of Clarion, before rebounding with a 3-0 win by decision over Shippensburg's Ryan Narber. In the third consolation round, Murphy defeated Mercyhurst's Trevor Johnson by major decision 10-1, before taking care of Jake Stratton of Gannon by major decision 11-1. Murphy earned a rematch with Cahill in the third-place match, with Cahill winning 3-1 in overtime.

Graeber placed fourth in the heavyweight division, beginning his day by beating Derrick Berberick of Shippensburg in a 9-6 decision, before falling to No. 13 Thomas Haines of Lock Haven by tech fall 16-0. In the second consolation round, Graeber defeated No. 3 Nick Budd of Gannon by decision 6-1. He then advanced over Jacob Robb of Mercyhurst by way of medical forfeit, before shutting out Edinboro's John Spaulding in a 2-0 decision. Graeber battled Pitt-Johnstown's No. 11 Damon Sims, Jr. in the third-place match, winning by decision 3-0.

Braden Stahlnecker (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) contributed 2.50 points to Bloomsburg's score at 141 pounds, advancing past Millersville's Keegan Worley by way of an injury default. Nate Newberry (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) added one point at 165 pounds, winning by decision 12-8 over Alec Shaw of Seton Hill. Logan Womelsdorf (Benton, Pa./Northwest Area) also registered one point for his team with an 11-4 win by decision over Evan Kauffman of Kutztown.

The Huskies will return to Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) competition next Saturday (Dec. 16) when they battle No. 24/18 Lock Haven. The action is set for a 5:30 p.m. start at Liberty Arena in Williamsport, Pa.
