LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior Brandon Conrad (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) beat a top-10 opponent in his second straight event and juniors Trevor Corl (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte Area) and Garrett Wesneski (Canton, Pa./Canton Area) also won all three of their bouts, as the Lycoming College wrestling team won two of its three meets at the Washington & Lee Duals on Monday, Dec. 18, falling to 16th-ranked North Central, 25-13, before downing Averett, 46-7, and Washington & Lee, 24-9.

Conrad improved to 17-2 on the season and 97-41 in his career, moving into seventh in the school’s career record book. Corl and Wesneski, both ranked 10th by d3wrestle.com, each reached 20 wins on the season, with Corl improving to 20-1 and Wesneski 20-2.

The Warriors (5-2 overall) won the final eight matches of the bout against Averett (0-3 overall), scoring bonus points in all eight, with six coming by fall in a 46-7 rout.

Lycoming’s roll started at 141 pounds when junior Andy Aguilar (Muncy, Pa./Muncy Area) posted a first-period pin before Corl followed with a technical fall at 149. Sophomore Hadyn Swartwood (157, Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area), freshman Kyle Bennett (165, Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area), Conrad (174), junior Dallas Labar (184, Bangor, Pa./Bangor) and junior Loc Long (197, Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) each followed with pins in less than a minute. Wesneski wrapped up the win with another technical fall at heavyweight.

The Warriors ground out a hard-fought 24-9 win over Washington & Lee, winning seven bouts, but only three came with bonus points, and all were by major decision, keeping the match in doubt until an 8-0 major decision win by junior Brad Miccio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Benton Area) at 197 pounds.

Freshman Shane Casey (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) got the Warriors out to a quick start with a 5-2 decision at 125 before sophomore Eric Hunt (Muncy, Pa./Warrior Run) won his first collegiate match, posting a 10-2 decision at 133 over Matt Mueller. After a close loss at 141, Corl posted a 5-1 decision at 149 and Swartwood followed with a 10-3 win at 157 to give Lycoming a 13-3 lead.

The Generals (2-2 overall) sandwiched wins in two of the next three bouts to close within 16-9, with Conrad posting a 2-1 win over Brandon LeFore thanks to a third-period reversal the lone Warrior win in the run. However, Miccio’s win gave Lycoming an insurmountable 11-point lead and Wesneski finished the meet with a 12-3 win at heavyweight over Mathew Kaminer.

In the opening match, the Warriors won four of the 10 matches, but 16th-ranked North Central posted four bonus-point wins to post a 25-13.

Lycoming matched up well with the Cardinals (4-0 overall), winning two of the five matches against grapplers mentioned in the national rankings, but the Cardinals’ 141-pounder Anthony Rink (d3wrestle.com honorable mention), 157-pounder Egan Berta (d3wrestle.com contender) and 197-pounder Tyler Vittal (NWCA No. 7, d3wrestle.com contender) were able to post 14 points in the win.

The Warriors were paced by the two wins over the ranked grapplers, though, with Conrad pulling off his second startling upset in as many matches, downing Matt Marcote, ranked 10th by the NWCA, by major decision, 8-0, at 174 pounds. 10th-ranked Corl also continued his hot start with a 6-1 decision against Ben Williamson, ranked as honorable mention by d3wrestle.com, at 149 pounds.

Casey won his debut match, 5-3 over Moe Mitchell at 125 pounds and 10th-ranked Wesneski added a 6-2 win over Audel Ochoa at heavyweight.

The Warriors get back on the mat on Saturday, Jan. 6, when they head to the N.Y./Pa. Duals at King’s College, facing RIT at 1 p.m. and Oswego at 2:30 p.m.
