Bald Eagle Bonus points carry Lock Haven to 31-7 win over Brown

FAIRFAX, Va. – The No. 23/18 Lock Haven University wrestling team improved to 9-1 after winning eight of 10 bouts in a thrilling 31-7 win over visiting Brown (2-4) today at home in front of a packed Thomas Fieldhouse crowd.

The nationally-ranked LHU wrestling team won eight of 10 bouts and picked up two upset-victories, four majors and a pin on the way to another lopsided victory.

Yesterday, Lock Haven dominated George Mason 40-6 in a return to Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action and today, the Bald Eagles poured it on once again. Five of the Bald Eagles’ eight wins came by way of bonus points as they recorded four majors and a pin.


Highlighting the victory was upset-wins from Alex Klucker (Summerdale, Pa./East Pennsboro) and Corey Hazel (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley).

At 9-1, the Bald Eagles are off to their best start in 16 seasons and with six scheduled duals remaining LHU all, but locked up its first winning season in five years.

DJ Fehlman (Warren, Pa./Warren) picked up a pin, while Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs), Ronnie Perry (Christiana, Pa./Solanco), Chance Marsteller (New Park, Pa./Kennard-Dale (Oklahoma State) and Jared Siegrist (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) all won by major decision.

Luke Werner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) rounded out The Haven winners today.

Lock Haven led wire-to-wire after winning the first eight bouts of the dual meet. LHU led 31-0 before Brown posted wins at 197 and 285 in the final bouts of the match. All four of the Bald Eagles nationally-ranked wrestlers in the lineup today posted wins.

Werner won 7-1 at 125 over Trey Keeley to get Lock Haven on the board and the Bald Eagles rolled from there. Fehlman was leading 14-1 before earning the pin at the 5:59 mark of his 133-pound bout.

Shoop, ranked No. 24, and Perry, ranked No. 16, followed up Fehlman’s pin with back-to-back major decisions at 141 and 149, respectively.

At 157, Klucker grinded out a hard-fought 4-0 win and upset No. 26 Justin Staudenmayer. It was the first of two Lock Haven upset-wins.

Marsteller, ranked No. 8, majored No. 31 Jon Viruet, 8-0 in a battle of nationally-ranked 165-pounders. Siegrist added another major for Lock Haven at 174.

At 184, Hazel, ranked No. 31, thrilled the home faithful with a workmanlike effort that led to a 2-0 upset of No. 18 CJ LaFragola at 184.
