Bald Eagles Chance Marsteller has been named the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Athlete of the Week

For the second time this season, Chance Marsteller has been named the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Athlete of the Week.
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – For the second time this season, Chance Marsteller (New Park, Pa./Kennard-Dale) of the Lock Haven University wrestling team has been named the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Athlete of the Week.

The nationally-ranked 165-pounder is coming off a third-place finish at the prestigious Southern Scuffle tournament. Marsteller’s third-place finish helped the Bald Eagles place 10th overall in the team standings, LHU’s highest ever finish at the event.

At the Scuffle, Marsteller went 5-1 overall. He opened the tournament 3-0, before falling in the semifinals. Despite his first loss of the season in the semis, he bounced back and rattled off two more wins for third.

On Day 1, Marsteller, ranked No. 7 nationally at 165 pounds, opened his day with a dominating 16-5 major decision over Air Force's Tyler Wiederholt. He followed it up by pinning Neal Richards (UNA) in 3:52. The pin of Richards pushed Marsteller into the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Marsteller locked up with No. 6 seed Mekhi Lewis (UNA, Va. Tech). Marsteller used a late third-period takedown to edge Lewis, 3-1. The win helped Marsteller finish Day 1 at the Scuffle at 3-0.

On Day 2, Marsteller, the No. 3 seed, was edged 3-2 in the semifinals by No. 2 seed Bryce Steiert, a two-time NCAA qualifier. The two were tied 0-0 after the first period and from there Marsteller pushed the pace, but just couldn't find a takedown. The loss snapped Marsteller's undefeated run as he'd opened the season with 22 straight wins. In the consolation semifinals, Marsteller bounced back in a big way and cruised past Ebed Jarrell (Drexel), 10-5 to earn a spot in the third-place bout. Marsteller locked up with a familiar face in the third-place bout as he met No. 6 seed Mekhi Lewis of Virginia Tech. On Day 1, Marsteller downed Lewis 3-1 in the quarterfinals. In the third-place bout, Marsteller once again came out on top in the bout with Lewis. Marsteller used a late takedown and downed Lewis 6-4 for third place.

Marsteller finished the Scuffle at 5-1 and he's now 24-1 overall on the season.

This weekly honor marks the second time this season where Marsteller has been named EWL Wrestler of the Week. In all, it’s the fourth time this season where a Lock Haven wrestler has taken home weekly honors from the EWL.
