WILKES-BARRE – Tommy Bowen and Mason Gross both provided huge minutes off the bench in the second half to lead the Wilkes University men’s basketball to an exciting 58-57 win over Delaware Valley University in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play at the Marts Center on Saturday evening.

The Colonels remain in first place with the win, improving to 7-1 in conference play and 14-5 overall and tie their season high with the current four game win streak.

After Delaware Valley recorded the first basket Wilkes went on a 12-2 run to jump out to a 12-4 lead with 10:35 remaining until halftime. Wilkes was outscored 24-12 the rest of the half as the Aggies entered the break with a 28-24 lead.

Delaware Valley expanded its lead to eight with a 4-0 run to start the half and pushed its lead to 11 at 37-26 with 15:16 left in the game.

The Aggies advantage remained at 11 with 12:31 on the clock and the scoreboard reading 42-31 before the Colonels went on a 15-0 run to retake the advantage at 46-42. Bowen started the run by converting a three-point play following an offensive rebound and a made layup. That was followed by layups from Marcus Robinson, two from Gross, two by Rob Pecorelli, and another from Robinson. During the run, Robinson and Gross had two steals apiece to thwart Delaware Valley’s offense and continue the momentum.

With 6:30 remaining and Wilkes up 51-46, the Aggies converted a layup and a three-pointer to tie the score at 51 before Gross hit yet another layup to give the Colonels a 53-51 lead and 2:52 left. Delaware Valley tied the score before Gross continued his late game heroics, backing down his defender in the low post and converting the layup and following free throw after getting fouled. The Aggies cut the lead to one following a layup but continued the Colonels theme of late game heroics, making both ends of a one-and-one to essentially put the game out of reach at 58-55 with 24 seconds on the clock. Delaware Valley made two free-throws to trim it to just one and Wilkes was unable to convert the front end of another one-and-one situation from the free throw line, but with only three second in the game the Aggies were unable to get a shot off.

Bowen led the way for the Colonels, tying his season-high with 14 points to go with seven rebounds and two assists. Gross just missed his respective season high, adding in 11 points and four rebounds in 16 minutes. Pecorelli rounded out the scorers in double-figures with 11 points, six rebounds, and a career-high four steals.

Continuing the theme of bench scoring, Lybrant Robinson finished with a game-high 19 points and four rebounds off the bench while Alex Mastinye contributed 17 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Wilkes returns to action on Wednesday when it will host FDU-Florham for an 8:00 p.m. MAC Freedom game at the Marts Center. The Colonels defeated the Devils in Madison, N.J. 75-52 to open conference play back on January 3rd.
