Career Scoring Day for Roberts Not Enough for Wilkes Women’s Basketball in Loss at Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – The Wilkes University women’s basketball team could not withstand 15 Eastern University three-pointers in a 93-79 loss Saturday afternoon in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action.

Gianna Roberts led the Lady Colonels with a career-high 21 points but Wilkes fell to 4-10 overall and 0-4 in MAC Freedom contests while Eastern used a 55.6 percent conversion rate on three-point attempts to improve to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

The Lady Colonels led by as many as four points four different times in a high-scoring first quarter but it was the Eagles that led 32-29 after the first 10 minutes. Catey McFadden and Vanessa Whitecavage each scored seven points in the quarter and Wilkes went 11-of-17 from the floor and 3-of-3 from three-point range in the quarter.

Eastern built a 40-31 lead but back-to-back trips down the floor where Roberts made a layup and the free-throw after taking contact pulled Wilkes to back within four points at 41-37 with 5:37 left until halftime. The Eagles would finish the second quarter on an 11-6 run to lead 52-43 but 12 points from Roberts in the quarter kept the Lady Colonels in contention.

The Eagles would open up a 17 point lead in the third quarter and led 75-60 heading into the fourth quarter. Roberts was able to score seven more points in the third quarter to bring her total to 21 for the game.

Eastern reached its largest lead of 18 points in the fourth quarter but Wilkes would outscore Eastern 14-10 in the final 5:14 of action behind seven points from Sierra Smith but never could cut the deficit to single digits.

Roberts added eight rebounds to her total along with three assists and four steals. Whitecavage scored a career-best 13 points and had five assists. McFadden just missed out on a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Alyssa Alfano added 12 points and five assists and Smith finished with nine points for the Lady Colonels who shot 19-of-27 as a team from the free-throw line and outscored the Eagles 40-28 in the paint.

Amanda Riiff led the Eastern attack with 27 points on 6-of-12 shooting from behind the arc. Taylor Price added 22 points and seven assists while Brianna Young-Harris had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
