Huskies Overpower Millersville in Conference Action Wednesday Night

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team used a strong shooting night to take care of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference foe Millersville__ Wednesday night (Jan. 10) at the Pucillo Gymnasium. 

The first few minutes were back-and-forth, but Bloomsburg was able to shoot smoothly to build a lead. The teams played to a 9-6 Bloomsburg lead in just under four minutes, which eventually took them to a media timeout. Right out of the break, it was Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) making his presence felt with a triple, before Khary Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading)scored a layup to extend the lead to eight. Conrad Chambers countered with a three-pointer of his own, before Caden Najdawi got the Marauders within three with a layup. Back-to-back Chambers three-pointers gave Millersville a 17-14 lead with 13 minutes left in the half, before buckets from Myles Bunyon(Collegeville, Pa./Valley Forge Military Academy) and Mortellite got the Huskies within one. Jamal Washington's layup got the Marauders up by three with just over 10 minutes to play, before a pair of free throws from Austin Harriott (Philadelphia, Pa./Hun School) got Bloomsburg within 21-20. 
Scores from Darius Robinson-Wallace (Philadelphia, Pa./Delaware Valley Charter)and Mortellite got the Huskies up 24-21 with nine minutes to play in the first half, before another jumper from Mortellite extended the lead to five. A long ball from James Sullivan on the ensuing possession made it a two-point game again, before Hashim Moore (Sunrise, Fla./Hun School) traded back-to-back buckets with Markus Adkinson and Detwon Shelton to leave the Huskies up 30-28 with six and a half minutes to play in the half. Out of the media break, Ethan Houston (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) sunk a free throw to move the lead to 33-28, before Jordan Greene got the game back to three points with a jumper. A layup from Greene got the game back to within one coming up on the final media timeout, before Moore exchanged a pair of free throws with a layup from Najdawi to leave Bloomsburg up 35-34 with 4:39 to play in the half. 
Adkinson knocked down a clutch three-pointer to get the Marauders up by two, before Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York)tied it at 37 with a layup. Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School) hit a pair at the line and then scored a layup to give Bloomsburg a 43-39 halftime lead.

The Huskies took control about two minutes into the half thanks to two good free throws from Moore, another bucket from Moore and a layup from Rose. For the rest of the game, the Huskies led by as few as seven and as many as 25 to pull away for their third straight win.

As a team, Bloomsburg shot 59.3 percent (35-59) from the floor, 50.0 percent (7-14) from downtown and 78.3 percent (18-23) from the charity stripe. All five starters scored in double-figures, led by Mortellite's 24. Moore added 15 on the night, while Rose contributed 14. Mauras and Saxton each chipped in 10. Bloomsburg out-rebounded Millersville 34-27, comprised of a 9-7 advantage on the offensive glass and a 25-20 advantage on the defensive end. Mortellite also paced the team with five assists on the night, while six other Huskies recorded helpers in the game. Rose led the blocking effort with four on the night, while Saxton recorded a team-high four steals.

The win moves Bloomsburg to 10-5 overall and evens their league record at 5-5. The loss moves Millersville to 5-11 and 3-7 in PSAC play.

The Huskies will hit the road again on Saturday (Jan. 10) to battle East Stroudsburg. Tip-off for that game is slated for 3:00 p.m.
