Huskies Women's Swimming Wins Fourth Straight, 136-84, At Susquehanna Friday Night


SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's swimming team posted a victory in all but two events on Friday night as it won its fourth consecutive dual, 136-84, at Susquehanna University. The Huskies improved to 4-2 overall on the season.

A total of 13 different swimmers tasted victory on Friday with Nikki Young (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) and Becca Cubbler(Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) earning a pair of wins - one individual and one relay - to lead the way. Kelley McHugh(Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower)Samantha Carpenter (Sunbury, Pa./Shamokin Area)Courtney Middleton (Vineland, N.J./Vineland)Sydney Mercer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Millville), and Karly Hursey (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) each posted individual wins while Kiera Wadsworth (Blakeslee, Pa./Ridley)Kelsey Neff (Elysburg, Pa./Bloomsburg)Lindsay Mooney(Salisbury, Md./Parkside)Shannon Ball (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff)Marykate Boylan (Edgemont, Pa./Penncrest), and Kate Cossitor (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) earned wins as part of relay teams.

The Huskies finished first and second in the 400-yard medley relay to start the evening. The team of Wadsworth, Neff, Young, and Mooney touched the wall in 4:03.63 - just ahead of the foursome of Mercer, Kristen Bane (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands), Middleton, and Ball, who finished the race in 4:05.08.

Bloomsburg built up a huge lead early as it finished 1-2-3 in the 1000-yard freestyle - the opening individual event of the night. Cubbler won the race in 10:48.46 while Chelsea Ackerson(Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) finished second in 10:57.11. Abby Kling(York, Pa./Spring Grove) was third, posting a time of 11:28.48. McHugh followed with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle as she finished in 1:59.42. She edged Hursey, who finished second with a time of 2:00.85.

After the Huskies got a second-place finish from Boylan in the 50-yard freestyle, Carpenter got Bloomsburg back in the win column after posting a time of 2:13.05 in the 200-yard individual medley. Middleton then earned a win in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.47.

Young finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.00 but was followed by three consecutive victories from Mercer in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.57), Hursey in the 500-yard freestyle (5:22.64), and Young in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.45).

In the final event of the night, Bloomsburg won the 200-yard freestyle relay as the foursome of Ball, Boylan, Cossitor, and Cubbler touched the wall in 1:40.42.

The Huskies will return to the pool on Saturday afternoon, January 20, when they host East Stroudsburg University at the Nelson Field House Pool. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
