WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Ramadan Jennings (Jackson, Ohio/Life Skills) scored a career-high 25 points and seniors Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) and Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) each notched double-doubles as the 11th-ranked Lycoming College men’s basketball team clinched a MAC Commonwealth Championship tournament berth with its 79-66 win over Alvernia University on Wednesday night, Jan. 31, at Lamade Gym.

The Warriors (19-2 overall, 10-2 MAC Commonwealth) clinched a postseason berth for the fourth straight year with Jennings leading the way off the bench as he hit 10-of-12 shots, grabbed seven rebounds and scored 16 of his 25 points after halftime. Newbold recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, as he hit 7-of-10 from the field. Wallace hit 5-of-8 shots for a 10-point and 11-rebound double-double.

With the game tied at 46 five minutes into the second half, the Warriors began to take control. It started with an offensive rebound and a two-handed dunk by Jennings to jumpstart a 12-1 run that was capped by a 3-pointer from sophomore Ronald Jefferson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King). The closest Alvernia got the rest of the game was seven points just a couple minutes after the Warriors took that 11-point lead. The Golden Wolves got within nine with 5:15 remaining, but it was turned into another double-digit deficit on a steal and dunk from Wallace with 2:47 left in the game. The lead ballooned to its biggest of the game at 16 on an and-one layup from Jefferson in the final minute.

In the first half, the Warriors put up eight points before Alvernia had a chance to answer and that lead grew to 15-5 as they hit 7-of-8 shots in the opening four minutes. The Golden Wolves, though, climbed back and caught fire from behind  the 3-point line and eventually took a 31-28. The Warriors were able to come back and take a 40-38 lead into the break after a tip-in from Newbold in the closing minute.

Overall, the Warriors outscored Alvernia 40-6 in the paint, including a 22-2 advantage in the second half. Lycoming also held decisive advantages in rebounding (48-32), second-chance points (25-15) and bench points (41-6) while also hitting 47 percent of its shots compared to 36 percent for Alvernia.
