LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- The Lock Haven University men’s and women’s cross country teams have been selected as winners of the 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award. LHU coaches and athletes received their award in a ceremony during a PSAC women’s and men’s basketball doubleheader on Wednesday evening.

The Lock Haven teams were recognized for their generosity following a Division II Cross Country Challenge at Kutztown University. After sighting the Bloomsburg University team bus stranded in a ditch alongside the road, and noticing the inability of the tow trucks to pull the bus out of trouble, LHU head coach Aaron Russell and his teams graciously offered the Bloomsburg athletes, coaches and additional personnel a ride home.

The LHU teams were receptive and accepting to the situation and made sure all BU personnel made it safely back to campus.

The PSAC Sportsmanship Award, now in its ninth year, is given annually to individuals or teams that best exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship and demonstrate the values of respect and integrity through a specific action.

Nominees are compared by their actions representing an institution in a positive way during competition and their demonstrations of good citizenship outside of competition by fostering a good public image.

At the beginning of the 2008-09 academic year, the PSAC Sportsmanship Award was implemented by the PSAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.  Nominations for the award are annually submitted by any PSAC school personnel, including administrators, coaches, and student-athletes.

The PSAC Sportsmanship Award mirrors the NCAA Sportsmanship Awards. The NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct selects one male and one female student-athlete or team from each Division (I, II, III). The NCAA divisional winners are released each year in late July.
