Lycoming College Warriors clinch postseason spot with 67-49 win

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high five blocks for her 10th double-double of the season to pace the Lycoming College women’s basketball team, as it posted a 67-49 win over Alvernia University to clinch a slot in the MAC Commonwealth Championship tournament for the fourth time in five years on Wednesday night, Jan. 31, at Lamade Gym.

Mueller was one of three Warriors (15-5 overall, 9-3 MAC Commonwealth) to finish in double figures, as sophomore Morgan Mader (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) also finished with 15 points to go with three assists and sophomore Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) added 13 points, five assists and five steals. Lycoming shot 42 percent (23-of-55) from the field and 83 percent (15-of-18) at the line, while holding Alvernia to 32 percent (17-of-54).

The Warriors used a run of 16 straight points spanning the first and second quarters to break the game open, as senior Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) posted six points and sophomore Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) added five during the run that lasted more than 10 minutes and ended with a 3-pointer from sophomore Morgan Mader (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) that made it 24-8 with 4:55 left in the first half. After the run of 16 points was ended, Lycoming went on another 12-3 run to take a 36-15 lead into the break.

The Warriors posted 14 points off turnover and six in transition in the half, with McFadden pacing the team with 11 points, three assists and two steals, while Mueller and Mader each contributed eight points a piece.

In the second half, the Warriors maintained nearly at least an 18-point lead until Alvernia cut the gap down to 11 with a run of nine straight points to make it 60-49 with 2:35 left. The Warriors, however, finished out the game with seven points to close out the win, hitting 7-of-8 at the line in the final moments.

Senior Haley Sipple (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) posted eight points and three rebounds and sophomoreTaylor Saunders (Hartford, Conn./Watkinson School) added six points, four rebounds and two steals for Lycoming.

Gabriella De Vito finished with 17 points and Kiersten Ingram posted nine points, six rebounds and six assists for the Golden Wolves.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Feb. 3, against Arcadia University, opening a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Lamade Gym.
