Men's Swimming - Huskies Compete Against Dickinson, SUNY Oneonta During Winter Training Trip

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Bloomsburg University men's and women's swimming teams were in action during their winter training trip, competing against both Dickinson College and SUNY Oneonta at the 2018 Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex (FLAC) Winter Training Invitational. Both the men's and women's teams posted easy victories in a tune-up for the final two months of the swimming season.

On the men's side, the Huskies scored 623 points with Dickinson finishing second with 213.5 points and SUNY Oneonta coming in third with a total of 95.5 points.

In the 50-yard butterfly, Matthew Schulz (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) won with a time of 24.23, edging teammates Jordan Wyant (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) and Collin Hummel(Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg). Wyant posted a time of 24.54 while Hummel touched the wall in 24.71. After a pair of Dickinson swimmers finished fourth and fifth, Josh Grzech (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood)Sam Feiser (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), and Noah Cancro (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) came in sixth through eighth, respectively, with each touching the wall in under 25 seconds - Grzech (24.94), Feiser (24.96), and Cancro (24.99).

Schulz won the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 25.96 while Grzech, Nathan Mihalko (Windber, Pa./Richland), Wyant, Matthew Rocchi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) finished third through sixth. Grzech posted a time of 26.45 while Mihalko came in with a mark of 26.48. Wyant (27.05) and Rocchi (27.22) were right behind.

Paul Rocchi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) claimed the win in the 50-yard breaststroke, posting a time of 27.47. Colin Bauer(Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts)Matthew Rocchi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan), and Cancro finished second, third, and fourth in the event with each posting times just a shade over 29 seconds.

Finally, in the 50-yard freestyle, the Huskies posted the top seven fastest times and eight of the top ten marks in the event. Wyant won the race with a time of 21.85, just out-touching Feiser who came in at 21.98. Cancro was third with a mark of 22.36 while Bauer was fourth with a time of 22.44. Grzech was fifth at 22.49, Alex McCullough (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) was sixth at 22.52, Hummel was seventh with a time of 22.71, and Lucas Haywood (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) was ninth with a time of 22.83.

On the women's side, Bloomsburg totaled 649 points with Dickinson (152.5) edging SUNY Oneonta (130.5) for second place.

The Huskies posted the top four times in the 50-yard butterfly with Nikki Young (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) winning the event with a time of 27.22. Samantha Carpenter (Sunbury, Pa./Shamokin Area) was second with a mark of 27.36 while Kate Cossitor(Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) and Marykate Boylan (Edgemont, Pa./Penncrest) tied for third at 27.56. Kelley McHugh(Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) and Sydney Mercer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Millville) also finished in the top ten, placing eighth and ninth.

Mercer would go on to claim the win in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 29.65 while Carpenter was the runner-up after posting a mark of 30.06. Kiera Wadsworth (Blakeslee, Pa./Ridley)came in third at 30.20. Boylan was fifth with a time of 30.39 while McHugh and Becca Cubbler (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford)finished seventh and eighth.

Young captured the win in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 29.96 - nearly two seconds ahead of Carpenter, who collected her third second-place finish of the day with a time of 31.73. Kristen Bane (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) was third at 33.02 while Sarah Ritter (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) (33.79), Kelsey Neff(Elysburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) (34.21), and Mercer (35.37) finishing fifth, sixth, and tenth, respectively.

In the final event of the day, Boylan won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.70 - one one-hundredth of a second faster than Carpenter, who finished as the runner-up for the fourth consecutive race. Young was third at 25.93, Cossitor was fourth at 26.01, Cubbler placed fifth at 26.07, Lindsay Mooney (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) came in sixth with a time of 26.59, Shannon Ball(New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) was eighth at 26.93, Mercer was ninth with a time of 26.98, and Ritter was tenth at 27.01.

The Huskies will get back into regular season action on Friday, January 19, when they head to Susquehanna University for a 5:00 p.m. start. Then, on Saturday, January 20, the women's team will host East Stroudsburg University at the Nelson Field House Pool beginning at 1:00 p.m.
