Roberts Double-Double Not Enough in Wilkes Women's Basketball 67-61 Loss Against Delaware Valley

WILKES-BARRE – Despite Gianna Roberts double-double of 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds host Wilkes University fell 67-61 to visiting Delaware Valley University Saturday afternoon at the Marts Center.

Following the loss Wilkes owns a 4-15 overall record and remains winless in MAC Freedom play at 0-8. Delaware Valley improved to 7-12 overall and evened its league mark at 4-4.

The teams traded baskets in the first seven minutes of the game before four straight layups from Delaware Valley gave the Aggies an 18-11 lead with 2:41 on the first quarter clock. Emily Sofranko stopped the 8-0 run with a three-pointer on Wilkes’ next possession as Delaware Valley settled for an 18-14 advantage after one quarter of play.

Catey McFadden began the second quarter scoring for Wilkes connecting on a corner three-pointer to cut the lead to 20-17 with 6:47 remaining in the half. Delaware Valley responded with a small 5-0 spurt to up its advantage to seven before two free throws from Jamie Campbell and a put back from Sierra Smith brought Wilkes to within three 24-21. Smith made the comeback complete on the Lady Colonels next possession nailing a trey in transition to tie the game at 24 with 2:00 left in the half. The Aggies used a three-pointer and two free throws sandwiched between a McFadden layup to take a 31-28 lead to the break.

Wilkes was able to tie the score in the first three minutes of the third quarter as layups from Roberts and McFadden knotted the contest at 32 with 7:13 on the clock. Back-to-back threes and two transitions scores put the Aggies back in front up 44-35 with just under three minutes left in the quarter. Two Free throws from Alyssa Alfano and a Vanessa Whitecavage jumper ended the scoring for Wilkes as the Lady Colonels trailed 47-41 after three quarters.

Delaware Valley took its largest lead of the game early in the fourth quarter before an Alfano three-pointer kept Wilkes close down 51-44. Roberts scored five quick points, a three-pointer and inside score, and Whitecavage hit two free throws to cut the lead to 63-58 with just under a minute remaining in the game. Wilkes drew an offensive foul on the next Delaware Valley possession, and Chelsea Erckes drained a three to bring Wilkes to within two down 63-61. Delaware Valley beat the press and scored in transition on the ensuing possession to go back up by four 65-61 with :24 left. Down four with the ball, Alfano’s driving layup was off the mark and Delaware Valley grabbed the rebound hitting one of two free throws to seal the conference victory.

Roberts recorded her fourth double-double of the season shooting 5-for-11 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. McFadden followed with nine points and five rebounds while Alfano chipped in eight points including two three-pointers.

Danielle Skedzielewski led three double figure scorers for Delaware Valley with a game-high 19 points.

Wilkes returns to MAC Freedom play Wednesday continuing its home stand with a 6:00 p.m. matchup against FDU-Florham in the Marts Center.
