WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With a career-high 27 points and a double-double during a game in which he scored his 1,000th career point, Lycoming College men’s basketball senior Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) was honored with his second career MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week award, the conference office in Annville, Pa., announced on Monday, Jan. 22.

Newbold led 10th-ranked Lycoming (17-1 overall, 8-1 MAC Commonwealth) to a 106-100 come-from-behind overtime win against Hood College on Saturday. Newbold recorded his fourth career double-double with 27 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and two steals. He scored his 1,000th point on an acrobatic layup with 1:51 remaining in overtime to give Lycoming a five-point lead. He’s the 32nd player in program history to score 1,000 career points and the second Warrior this season.

Newbold scored 17 of his 27 points in the second half and overtime, and he scored nine of the team’s 13 overtime points to lead his team to a win in which it fell behind by 12 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. He also hit 10-of-15 shots and 7-of-9 from the free throw line.

It was the Warriors’ second Player of the Week award this season after senior Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) earned it Dec. 18, 2017 after scoring his 1,000th career point.

The Warriors return to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 22, when they head to Messiah College for an 8 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game.
