WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's basketball team jumped out to a large lead in the first half, only to see it begin to disappear but ultimately hung on to defeat Manhattanville College 73-68 at the Marts Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels improved to 2-0 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play and 9-4 overall with the victory.

Manhattanville registered the first basket of the game with both teams matching buckets until the game was tied at 11 with 14:39 until halftime. From there Wilkes commenced a 12-0 run over the next 3:06, holding a 23-11 lead with 11:33 on the clock.

The Colonels kept that margin for the rest of the half, entering the break with a 37-24 lead.

Wilkes remained in cruise control for most of the second half, starting on a 15-7 run that gave the Colonels a 21-point lead at 52-31, a game-high that it would reach two more times.

The Valiants, however, took advantage of bad Wilkes possessions and costly turnovers to re-enter the game, starting a 30-10 that closed the advantage to just four points at 69-65 with 41 seconds showing on the clock.
Wilkes did not make it easy for itself, converting only 10 of 22 free throws in the half, most of them towards the end of the game.

The game was out of reach with 20 seconds remaining when Connor Evans converted both free throws to give the Colonels a 72-66 lead.

Wilkes was led by Marcus Robinson's 16 points and six rebounds. Rob Pecorelli and Evans each added 14 points, with Pecorelli contributing 11 rebounds and three assists for his first career double-double.

Manhattanville was led by Jojo Cobbs, who finished with a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Dom Arena added 16 points in 21 minutes off the bench while Sean Smith had 13 points and six rebounds.

The Colonels return to action on Wednesday when they head to Doylestown for a MAC Freedom matchup with Delaware Valley starting at 6:00 p.m.
