Wilkes University senior Brunner Named MAC Freedom Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

ANNVILLE, PA – Wilkes University senior Zach Brunner was named Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Men’s Basketball Player of the Week as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

Brunner played an important role in leading the Colonels to a 2-0 week in conference play after trailing at halftime in both contests. Brunner finished the week averaging 14 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and shooting 67 percent from the field and 86 percent from the charity stripe.

“Zach was instrumental in both victories this past week. He played great defense and did a great job of rebounding the ball and scoring key baskets and free throws at crucial parts of both games,” said head coach Izzi Metz. “He has been a senior leader throughout the entire season and it has really rubbed off on our team.”

The senior forward scored 11 points with six rebounds and an assist in a 72-66 win over DeSales. After trailing 29-25 at the break, the senior led the Colonels with eight of his 11 points in the second half.

More impressively, Brunner scored all 17 of his points and recorded nine of his 11 rebounds in the second half in a comeback win over King’s. He finished the game with 17 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks in the 76-64 victory.

The Colonels (12-6, 5-1 MAC Freedom) sit atop the conference in a three-way tie for first place with Eastern and Misericordia. Wilkes travels to Misericordia Wednesday for an important MAC Freedom matchup in Dallas, Pa. starting at 8:00 p.m.
