Wilkes Women’s Basketball’s Comeback Spoiled by Late Run by Delaware Valley

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Wilkes University women’s basketball team came from behind to take a fourth quarter lead but ultimately fell at Delaware Valley 83-71 Wednesday night in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action.

Catey McFadden led the Lady Colonels with a career-high 20 points. She shot 5-of-8 from three-point range in the contest. Gianna Roberts recorded her fourth career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Wilkes is now 4-9 overall and fell to 0-3 in MAC Freedom games while Delaware Valley improved to 4-10 and 1-2 in the conference.

After the Aggies jumped out to a 5-0 lead the Lady Colonels answered with six straight points to take their first lead. McFadden made a three-pointer, Vanessa Whitecavage hit a free-throw, and Roberts capped the run with a layup.

Delaware Valley scored the next four points before Jamie Campbell scored the next seven points to give Wilkes a 13-9 lead with just under one minute left in the first quarter. Wilkes would hold a 15-14 lead at the end of the first ten minutes.

The Aggies started the second quarter on a 20-9 run to take a 34-24 lead over the Lady Colonels before Wilkes responded with an 8-4 run to head into halftime trailing 38-32.

A Roberts’ layup with 6:33 left in the third quarter cut the Aggies lead to three points but Delaware Valley was able to open the lead back up to eight points at 60-52 after the end of the third quarter.

The Lady Colonels used an 11-3 run to tie the score at 63 after McFadden connected on a shot from behind the arc. Delaware Valley scored the next four points but then Whitecavage nailed a three and Roberts was good on a layup to give Wilkes the lead at 68-67 with 4:20 left in the game.

The Aggies were able to go on the final decisive run, closing with a 16-3 spurt including 10 points from the free-throw line.

Campbell scored nine points and Alyssa Alfano and Whitecavage added eight points apiece. Sierra Smith led the Lady Colonels with four assists to register her new career-high.

The Aggies were led by 22 points from Danielle Skedzielewski and 16 points from Ashley Smink. Morgan Mitchell recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists.

Wilkes returns to the floor for another MAC Freedom road contest on Saturday when it heads to St. Davids, Pa. to take on Eastern at 1:00 p.m.
