Yustat Scores Career-High in Wilkes Women’s Basketball’s Loss to FDU-Florham

WILKES-BARRE – Kelsey Yustat scored a career-high nine points off the bench but the Wilkes University women’s basketball team lost 104-63 to FDU-Florham in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action at the Marts Center Wednesday night.

The loss sent to Wilkes 4-16 overall and to 0-9 in MAC Freedom games while FDU-Florham improved to 14-6 overall and to 7-2 in the conference.

The Devils began the game with the first 10 points before the Lady Colonels cut the advantage to 10-4 with an Alyssa Alfano layup and a Maddie Kelley jumper. Yustat provided a spark to Wilkes when she entered the game and cut the FDU-Florham advantage to 22-11 with 2:41 left in the first quarter when she drained a three-pointer for her second basket. The Devils would close the quarter on a nine-point run to lead 31-11 after 10 minutes.

The Lady Colonels came out strong in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 14 points with a 12-6 spurt in the first 2:46 of the quarter. Catey McFadden started the scoring with a three-point play before Sierra Smith connected on two layups. Ahriyah Richardson-Watson connected on two free-throws and Alfano made a trey to cap off the scoring run. A layup through contact and made free-throw by Gianna Roberts cut the Devils lead to down to 44-31 with 2:20 left until halftime.

Wilkes outscored FDU-Florham 22-17 in the second quarter and trailed 48-33 at the break. Richardson-Watson and Alfano led the Lady Colonels with six first-half points and Roberts grabbed eight rebounds.

FDU-Florham extended its lead in the third quarter and led 80-48 heading to the fourth. Yustat converted on a jumper from the right-wing just before the buzzer to end the third quarter of action.

Chelsea Erkes opened the final quarter by nailing a shot from behind the arc for the Lady Colonels.

Roberts joined Yustat for the team lead with nine points and she also corralled 10 rebounds. Alfano added eight points, three rebounds, two assists, and three steals while McFadden finished with seven points and three blocks. Smith led the team and tied her career-high with four assists.

The MAC Freedom’s leading scorer Kendrea Williams was the star for FDU-Florham. She shot 12-of-18 from the floor for 37 points including six three-pointers. Bria Smith added 19 points and Gabrielle Harris had 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Lady Colonels travel to Purchase, N.Y. to face Manhattanville College Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in their next contest.
