YORK, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's swimming team will be heading to the Graham Aquatic Center to compete in the 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships which is set to begin on Wednesday, February 21 and continue through Saturday, February 24. Preliminaries are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. each day while finals are set for 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Last season, the Huskies finished as the runner-up for the second consecutive season, finishing with a total of 836 points. West Chester went on to claim its 19th consecutive team title after posting a total of 1007 points in the overall team standings.
Sam Feiser (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) earned five conference titles in the four-day event last season after winning the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly while being a part of the 400-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay, and 400-yard medley relay that claimed victories. Feiser set PSAC records in the 50-yard freestyle (19.98) and 100-yard butterfly (48.52) while his 400-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay teams also captured PSAC records. He also set a meet record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 44.42 in the prelims. He finished second in the finals with a time of 44.51.
Also back after a tremendous conference meet last season is Josh Grzech (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) who won four times a year ago. Grzech set a meet record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.20. He also was part of the 400-yard freestyle relay, the 200-yard medley relay, and the 200-yard freestyle relay teams that earned conference titles last season.
Bloomsburg went 5-2 in duals during the 2017-18 regular season but ended the year on a five-meet winning streak. The Huskies also had another strong showing at the Zippy Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron, as they finished fifth in the event.
The Huskies have plenty of firepower in the hunt for individual conference championships led by seniors Feiser and Grzech and sophomores Jordan Wyant (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) and Doug Boehme (Blue Bell, Pa./Buxmont Christian Academy). Feiser is seeded third in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Wyant has the top time in the 100-yard freestyle and is seeded second in the 200-yard freestyle and sixth in the 200-yard individual medley. Boehme, meanwhile, is first in the 500-yard freestyle and second in both the 1000-yard freestyle and 1650-yard freestyle.
Senior Paul Rocchi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) is also seeded in the top ten in three events and will be looking to close out his career with a big meet. Rocchi enters ranked ninth in the 200-yard individual medley, eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke, and fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Colin Bauer (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) is also in the top ten in three events as he comes in ranked tenth in the 50-yard freestyle, ninth in the 100-yard butterfly, and seventh in the 200-yard butterfly. Freshman Noah Cancro (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) enters eighth in the 50-yard freestyle, tenth in the 100-yard breaststroke, and ninth in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Several others should have important roles in determining where the Huskies finish in the overall team standings. Included among those individuals are Seth Chamberlain (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg), Sean Finias (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East), Lucas Haywood (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill), Collin Hummel (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg), Alex McCullough (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Nathan Mihalko (Windber, Pa./Richland), Tyler Reed (Hereford, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), Jordan Rivera (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall), Matthew Rocchi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan), and Matthew Schulz (Norristown, Pa./Methacton).
