Huskies - Softball Splits on Day One of Opening Weekend

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Bloomsburg University softball team split its two games on the first day of the Coker Spring Tournament on Saturday (Feb. 24), beating Lees-McRae 5-3 before falling to Shepherd by mercy rule 8-0 in six innings.


The scoring began in the second for Lees-McRae with a Katie Robinson single to right field to score Sarah Tucker putting the Bobcats up 1-0. Bloomsburg would counter for four runs on four hits, aided by two Bobcat errors. Marissa Shelhamer(Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) led off the inning wearing a pitch, before Abbey Remley (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area)sacrificed her over to second. Ashli Venokur (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) singled to move Shelhamer to third and put runners on the corners with one out. Erin Smith (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) drew a walk to load the bases and turn the lineup over for Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield), who was hit by a pitch to bring Shelhamer across to tie the game at one. A RBI single to left by Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) and a sacrifice fly to center by Emily Mayhew(Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) scored two runs and put the Huskies up 3-1 with two outs, as Winkelman moved to second and then third respectively on the plays. Winkelman would score the fourth run of the frame on a passed ball. Lees-McRae countered with two runs in the top half of the third on a RBI single from Noel Cassidy that scored Caitlyn Ray and a RBI double from Tucker that scored Kara Cunningham. The Huskies scored their fifth and final run in the bottom of the fourth, which began with a one-out bunt single from Winkelman. A deep fly ball to left off the bat of Hall moved Winkelman up to second, before Mayhew doubled to left to score Winkelman and pick up her second RBI of the contest.

Venokur led the offense with a 2-3 day at the plate, also scoring one run. Winkelman, Hall, Mayhew and Smith each recorded one hit in the game, while Mayhew collected a game-high two RBI. Winkelman and Hall also drove in one run apiece. Alyssa Davies(Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) (1-0) got the win in the circle for the Huskies, tossing 4.2 innings allowing three earned runs on nine hits. She punched out five and did not issue a walk in her season debut. After recording the second out of the fourth, she handed the ball off to Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte), who fired 2.1 innings of relief to earn her first save of the season. Baney did not allow a hit, and walked and struck out one apiece. The combined effort of Davies and Baney held Lees-McRae scoreless after the third inning.

Shepherd scored once in the first, three times in the third and twice each in the fifth and sixth innings. Kaitlyn Munda scored the first run on a wild pitch in the first inning. Shepherd did most of their damage in the later innings, beginning with a three-run third. With the bases loaded, Alexis Shearer scored Molly Staley on an infield single before Jessica Robinson walked to score a run. Stocks drew the second consecutive walk to plate the third run in the frame. In the fifth, a Kaitlyn Konopka knocked a two-RBI double that scored Stocks and Shearer. In the sixth, a two-run homer by Munda scored Lori Sturgill and ended the game.

Kaylnn Wheeland recorded the lone hit in the second game for her first double of the season. Smith (0-1) took the loss in game two, allowing four earned runs in 2.1 innings on three hits. She walked four and struck out three in the effort. Abby Wild(Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) tossed three innings of relief, allowing four earned runs on two hits. She issued two free passes and recorded one strikeout in the contest.

Bloomsburg (1-1) will return to the diamond for day two of the tournament tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 25) when they take on Charleston at 9:00 a.m. and Fairmont State at 11:00 a.m.
