Huskies Woelfel Named Baseball's PSAC Eastern Division Co-Athlete Of The Week

Baseball
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Redshirt junior Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) of the Bloomsburg University baseball team has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Co-Athlete of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. It marks the first time in his collegiate career that he has been honored with a weekly award from the conference.

Woelfel returned to the Bloomsburg lineup in a big way after missing all of last season due to an injury. During the opening weekend, Woelfel batted .462 (6-of-13) with ten runs scored, three doubles, two home runs, and seven runs batted in as the Huskies went 3-1 to start the season. He had at least one hit, one RBI, and two runs scored in each of the four games over the weekend while batting out of the leadoff spot. He also walked six times and did not strike out in 21 plate appearances, giving him an on-base percentage of .571. Five of his six hits went for extra bases (three doubles, two home runs) to give him a slugging percentage of 1.154 for the four games. He added two sacrifice flies and was a perfect 7-of-7 in field chances (six putouts, one assist) from his right field position.

He started the season by going 1-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored, and three runs batted in during the Huskies' 15-2 victory over The Apprentice School on Friday morning. The round tripper was his first home run since going deep against Mansfield on March 25, 2016. He followed that performance by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in against Kutztown later that afternoon. On day two, Woelfel went a combined 3-for-6 with five runs scored, two doubles, a home run, and two RBI as the Huskies split a pair of games against The Apprentice School and Kutztown on Saturday.

Through the first four games of the season, Woelfel leads the team in runs scored (10), total bases (15), walks (6), and slugging percentage (1.154). He is tied for the team lead in doubles (3) and home runs (2) and ranks second, or tied for second, on the team in hits (6), runs batted in (7), and on-base percentage (.571).

Woelfel and the Huskies return to action on Saturday, March 3, and Sunday, March 4, with back-to-back doubleheaders against seventh-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas in Colonial Heights, Virginia. First pitch of Saturday's nine-inning twinbill will get underway at 11:00 a.m. while Sunday's seven-inning doubleheader will begin at 10:00 a.m.
