COMPLETE WARRIORS WINTER OPEN BRACKETS
VESTAL, N.Y. - The Bloomsburg University wrestling team fell to Binghamton in dual match competition 21-12 on Sunday (Feb. 11), while Trevor Allard (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) and Saul Wilkins IV(Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) placed in their respective weight classes at the Warriors Winter Open at East Stroudsburg University. Allard won the 184-pound bracket, while Wilkins placed third at 285 pounds.
Willy Girard (Williamstown, Pa/Williams Valley) began the dual match at Binghamton with a 16-9 decision over Joe Nelson at 125 pounds. After a takedown, being reversed, Girard secured another takedown and four back points to stretch his lead to 8-2, before he was reversed again for an 8-4 lead after one period. In the second, he stretched his lead to 11-4 with an escape and a takedown. Girard would score two more takedowns in the third and get one point with riding time to get the win by decision. Andy Schutz (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) would put BU up 6-0 with a nail-biting 4-3 decision at 133 pounds over Jake Nicholson. After escaping from a Nicholson takedown, Schutz trailed 2-1 after one period. The only scoring in the second was an escape by Nicholson, to leave Schutz down 3-1 after two periods. Schutz began the period with another escape, before scoring a takedown in the final minute to get the come-from-behind win.
Binghamton would clinch the match with a string of six straight wins that included four decisions, one major decision and one technical fall. Joe Russ defeated Shawn Orem (Pasadena, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) by decision 8-2 at 141 pounds, before Frank Garcia beat Braden Stahlnecker (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) by decision 9-3 at 149 pounds. Tristan Rifanburg defeated Kevin Laubach Jr. (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) by decision 5-2 at 157 pounds, before Vincent DePrez beat Nate Newberry(Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) by 11-2 major decision at 165 pounds. Anthony Lombardo beat Kyle Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) in a close 3-2 decision at 174 pounds, before No. 13/14 Steven Schneider earned a 19-3 technical fall (3:00) win over Anthony Vetrano (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North).
Bloomsburg would earn two decisions to close out the match from Logan Womelsdorf (Benton, Pa./Northwest Area) and Bruce Graeber (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy). After a scoreless first period between Womelsdorf and Alex Melikian, a Melikian escape in the second left Womelsdorf down 1-0 headed to the third. Womelsdorf would earn a stall point in the third to send the bout to overtime. Womelsdorf would score a quick takedown to earn the 3-1 win by sudden victory. Graeber traded a takedown with an escape from Sean Dee to take a 2-1 lead after one period, before escaping and taking down Dee in the second for a 5-2 lead headed to the third. Graeber earned his last point by riding time in a 6-2 win by decision.
The win moves Binghamton to 11-5 overall, while Bloomsburg falls to 5-9 in dual match competition.

Wilkins's day began with a 9-0 major decision win over Pittsburgh's Tanner Zagarino (unattached), before dropping a 3-1 decision by second tie-breaker to Ben Sullivan of Usmaps. Wilkins responded with a 13-1 major decision over John Barlow of Kutztown (unattached), before defeating Eric Keosseian of Usmaps by fall in 6:41 to finish third on the day.
Marco Macrino (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) earned one win wrestling unattached at 133 pounds, holding a 6-3 lead over Peter Ogunsanya of Usmaps before the match was called due to medical forfeit. Chase Gardner (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) also earned one win at 157 pounds wrestling unattached, winning by 15-0 technical fall (6:02) over Anthony Chambers of CMSV.
The Huskies conclude the regular season next Saturday (Feb. 17) with a non-conference dual at Bucknell. The action is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
