Lycoming Wrestling - Four Warriors in semifinals after day one of regionals

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. – All 10 Lycoming College wrestlers factored into the team’s scoring at the NCAA Southeast Regional, with four advancing to the tournament semifinals and one still alive in the wrestleback brackets after competition on the first day of the tournament at Franklin County High School on Friday, Feb. 23.

The four Warriors seeded in the top two of the tournament each advanced to the semifinals, as junior 149-pounder Trevor Corl (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte Area), sophomore 157-pounder Hadyn Swartwood(Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area), senior 174-pounder Brandon Conrad (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) and junior Garrett Wesneski (Canton, Pa./Canton Area) each rolled through their first two matches, leaving them a semifinal win away from reaching the NCAA Division III Championships in Cleveland on March 9-10.

All 10 wrestlers won at least one match, putting the Warriors fourth with 59.5 points in the field of 18 teams at the conclusion of the first day of competition. The Warriors are behind 15th-ranked Messiah (73.5), 14th-ranked York (Pa.) (70.5) and Ferrum (60.5) at the end of the first day. The tournament will commence with the semifinals and consolation quarterfinals on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 9 a.m.

Corl gritted through a tough quarterfinal match against Zachary Wilson of Greensboro College. He took an early lead with a takedown, but Wilson came back to tie it with a penalty point and an escape. Wilson took the lead with a takedown as a cut developed over Corl’s eye with seven seconds left in the first period. After the delay to clean up, Corl drove through for a reversal as the time expired on the period. In the second period, Corl took bottom, got an escape and a takedown and added a third-period takedown as well to clean up the 9-7 win.

Corl began his run at the regional with a 54-second technical fall over Southern Virginia’s Christopher Fletcher, posting three four-point near falls and a two-point near fall in less than a minute.

Corl will face Messiah’s Stephen Maloney in the regional semifinals on Saturday morning.

Swartwood started his run with an edge of the mat takedown over Gettysburg’s Jake Bracken before using an armbar to get a turn and pin in 1:03. He followed with another impressive performance in the quarterfinals, getting a reversal in the second period and turning it into a pin of Kyle Medrow in 3:44. He will face York’s Eric Hutchinson in the semifinals.

Like Swartwood, Conrad reached the regional semifinals with a pair of pins. In the quarterfinal with Wilkes’ John Ritter, Conrad was aggressive from the start, scoring a takedown and a 2-point near fall in the first 30 seconds. With an armbar secured, he went to work, eventually earning the pin in 2:29. Conrad started the tournament with a pin of Gettysburg’s Quinn Merrigan in 1:53, overpowering the Bullet wrestler with two takedowns in the opening period, dropping him straight onto his back the second time. He will face York’s Joseph Sindoni in the meet’s semifinals on Saturday.

Wesneski started his run with a 10-0 win over Mathew Kaminer of Washington & Lee, using a takedown in each period to control the match. He followed that with a dominating 15-4 win Southern Virginia’s Nico Ramirez, breezing into the semifinals, where he will face King’s Ralph Bernardo on Saturday.

Sophomore Eric Hunt (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) stayed alive at 133, posting a pin over Thiel’s Justin Bable in his first wrestleback in 2:19 before adding a 15-4 win over Washington & Lee’s Matthew Mueller to reach Saturday’s consolation quarterfinals. Hunt will need to win three matches on Saturday to capture third and earn a bid to the national tournament.

After a loss in the round of 16, he rebounded with a pin of Averett’s Seth Wilson in 2:54.
