Men's Basketball Completes Season Sweep Of Cheyney Wednesday, 75-58

CHEYNEY, Pa. - Redshirt senior Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) led four players in double figures on Wednesday night as the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team earned a 75-58 victory at pesky Cheyney University to complete the season sweep of the Wolves. The Huskies improved to 13-9 overall and 9-9 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings while Cheyney dropped to 2-18 overall and 2-14 in league play. Bloomsburg has now won 11 straight against Cheyney in the all-time series.

Mortellite finished with a game-high 18 points to pace the visitors in scoring. Senior Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School) added 15 points while sophomore Austin Harriott(Philadelphia, Pa./Hun School) and freshman Ethan Houston(Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively, to give the Huskies four double-digit scorers. Harriott added a game-high 10 rebounds for his first career double-double while Houston's ten points gave him back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts for the first time in his young career.

The Huskies jumped out to a 13-4 lead after a jumper from Rose with 15:29 left in the first half before the Wolves went on a 10-0 spurt to take a 14-13 advantage with 8:30 remaining in the opening twenty minutes. Freshman Nicholas King (Easton, Pa./Freedom) came off the bench to spark Bloomsburg as the visitors reclaimed a 20-16 advantage with 7:38 remaining. King converted a layup and then knocked down a triple to get the lead back up to four.

After a layup from Cheyney's Olin Ugo cut the lead to 20-18 with 7:13 left, neither team would score again until Rose went 1-of-2 from the foul line three-and-a-half minutes later to extend the advantage to 21-18 with 3:40 left. Mortellite followed with a perfect 3-of-3 trip at the line and then a deep three-pointer to boost the lead to 27-20 with 1:30 left. Both teams scored one more time to close out the half with Bloomsburg leading 29-22 at the break.

Early in the second half, Mortellite knocked down another three-pointer to get the advantage into double-digits, 35-24, for the first time on the evening. But, the Wolves battled back with six straight points to cut the Huskies' lead to 35-30 with 16:03 remaining. Mortellite drilled another three-pointer to extend the lead to 38-30 and then the Huskies worked the lead back into double-figures on back-to-back hoops from Harriott and redshirt sophomore Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) just moments later.

Cheyney cut the lead to eight before Houston came up with back-to-back three-pointers to build up the Huskies largest lead of the game, 48-34, with 13:14 left. However, Cheyney scored seven straight to trim the lead to seven, 48-41, with 11:10 left before the Huskies scored six straight to build the lead back to 13 - 54-41 - with 9:38 left. Cheyney would get the lead back to single-digits (54-45) one more time before Mortellite converted a three-point play to get the lead back to a dozen with 7:52 left.

Bloomsburg worked the lead up to as many as 23 points down the stretch before settling for the 17-point victory.

Jeff Lewis led Cheyney with 14 points in a losing effort.

The Huskies return home on Saturday, February 10, to host Millersville at the Nelson Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and will be Senior Day. Bloomsburg will honor Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton)Hashim Moore(Sunrise, Fla./Hun School), and Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School) prior to the start. The Huskies will be looking to complete the season sweep after knocking off the Marauders, 95-72, on January 10.
