Men's Basketball - Lycoming Warriors fall in overtime, clinch third seed

READING, Pa. – Sophomore Ronald Jefferson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) scored 18 points and seniorChris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) notched his fifth double-double of the season, but the 20th-ranked Lycoming College men’s basketball team dropped an overtime MAC Commonwealth game to Albright College, 87-80, on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 17, at the Bollman Center.


The Warriors (19-6 overall, 10-6 MAC Commonwealth) will enter the MAC Commonwealth Championships as the No. 3 seed, heading to No. 2 Lebanon Valley (16-9 overall, 10-6 MAC Commonwealth) on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. Albright (19-5 overall, 12-4 MAC Commonwealth) clinched the top seed with the win.

Lycoming held a 15-point halftime lead, but Albright battled back and got within single digits on a 3-pointer from Fred Rowles less than four minutes into the second half. Freshman Ramadan Jennings (Jackson, Ohio/Life Skills) hit a putback layup with 6:45 remaining in regulation to give the Warriors another double-digit lead at 11, but Albright got within two points three minutes later. It then took its first lead with 2:06 to go on another 3-pointer from Rowles. Wallace’s layup a possession later tied the game at 72. Albright had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but senior Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) played lockdown defense on the final possession and forced a long 3-pointer.

After a won tipoff from Wallace to start overtime, Jennings was fouled a few seconds in and hit 1-of-2 free throws to give the Warriors a 73-72 lead, but Albright earned a seven-point advantage at 83-76 and hung on for the win.

Getting off to a blistering start, Lycoming hit 10-of-15 3-pointers in the first half and had 26 points in the first eleven minutes, as it started 6-for-7 from behind the 3-point line. The Warriors led by as many as 23 as Jefferson hit all three of his shots from behind the arc, freshman D’Yante Doughty (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) also hit three and junior T.J. Duckett (Severna Park, Md./Calvert Hall) and junior Calvin Chandler (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) each hit two. Lycoming took control midway through the first half when it went on a 23-5 run. Other than one early tie, the Warriors led the whole first half, taking a 44-29 lead into the break.

Wallace totaled 10 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Newbold grabbed 12 rebounds and scored eight points, including a big tip-in late in regulation. Doughty added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Rowles scored a game-high 26 points with 11 rebounds and seven assists for Albright. DeJuan Smith added 14 points and 15 rebounds.
