WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Down by a goal entering the fourth quarter, the Lycoming men’s lacrosse team erased the deficit and took a two-goal lead within 150 seconds and went on to post six goals in the frame to down Susquehanna University, 12-9, for the first time since 2012, in both teams’ season opener on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 17, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

With the score 7-6, the Warriors (1-0 overall) won a critical faceoff to start the fourth quarter after winning just 1-of-5 in the third quarter. Sophomore Shain Quigley (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford Area) threw a cross-crease pass to the left side for sophomore Tyler Thompson (Napean, Ontario/Mother Teresa), who fired a shot over the shoulder of the Susquehanna keeper to tie it. Junior Alex Artur (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) won the ensuing faceoff and drove straight to goal, where he fired low to give Lycoming an 8-7 lead. Senior Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) capped the run by firing in another hard shot after a tough dodge with 12:24 left.

The River Hawks (0-1 overall) got back within a goal thanks to a tipped pass that drifted into the net with 11:30 left, but the Warriors responded with two more goals in a 27-second span, the first coming from junior Andrew Ream (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) in front of the net and the second from sophomore Drew Collins (Victor, N.Y./Victor). Susquehanna closed within a pair once more, but Ream finished the scoring off with a goal with 3:00 left to give Lycoming a three-goal lead, tied for its largest of the game.

Lycoming was led by four goals from Collins and three from Ream. Thompson added a goal and two assists and sophomore Nick George (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) and Artur each had a goal and an assist. Ream and Thompson each grabbed three groundballs.

The Warriors held a 48-30 advantage in shots, helped along by winning 18-of-25 faceoffs and holding a 31-22 advantage in ground balls. The Warriors turned the ball over just 12 times, including just one in the fourth quarter.

Artur won 12-of-16 at the ‘x’, leading the way with nine groundballs and George won 6-of-9. Sophomore Sam Pollock (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) led the defense with four groundballs and three caused turnovers. Junior Austin Arroyo (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) also had three caused turnovers and two groundballs.

Collins got the Warriors out to a strong start, scoring twice in the opening five minutes, as Lycoming took a 3-1 lead into the second quarter. In the second quarter, the Warriors took a 4-2 lead when Collins scored his third goal with 10:16 left, but with two goals with in a 50-second span, Susquehanna tied it at four with 2:04 left. Just 10 seconds later, Artur, after winning the faceoff, found junior Travis Rode (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon), who fired in a laser to give Lycoming a 5-4 lead at the break.

In the third quarter, Susquehanna, thanks to winning three straight faceoffs got three goals from Alec Tzaneteas, taking a 7-5 lead with 11:55 left. The Warriors cut into the lead, though, when George scored in transition to make it 7-6, where it stayed until Lycoming rallied in the fourth quarter.

Tzaneteas led Susquehanna with five goals and Jake Smolokoff added two. Dylan Abplanalp and Travis Yaga each posted five groundballs with Yaga adding three caused turnovers.

Junior Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) stopped seven shots to earn the win and Abplanalp finished with 19 saves for the River Hawks.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Feb. 24, when they head to Gwynedd Mercy for a 1 p.m. start.
