Mid-Game Run Leads Wilkes Men's Lacrosse to First Win of 2018

LA PLUME, Pa. - An eight goal run through the second and third quarter coupled with solid goaltending helped the Wilkes University men's lacrosse team to its first victory of the 2018 season, a 14-3 triumph over Keystone College on Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels improved to 1-2 on the young season with the win.

Wilkes got the scoring started in the seventh minute with a goal from Jeremy Kachel, followed less than two minutes later by a second from Nico Lorenzo to give the Colonels an early 2-0 lead.

Keystone cut the lead to 2-1 with an unassisted goal at the 5:42 mark but Connor Daly put one home with Wilkes a man up to give the Colonels a 3-1 lead at the end of the first 15 minutes.

The Giants scored with 11:57 left until halftime to make the score 3-2, but over the next 28-plus minutes Wilkes scored eight consecutive goals highlighted by two from Kachel and two from Nicholas Ruggiero, as the Colonels raced out to an 11-2 lead. The run ended on a Keystone man-up goal with 5:42 showing oin the fourth-quarter clock. James Peaney, Jack Moyer, and Max Brown scored over the final 4:39 to conclude the outburst.

Kachel led Wilkes with three goals for his first career hat-trick. Daly, Lorenzo, and Ruggiero each added two goals. Lorenzo (two assists), John Luna (one goal, three assists), and John Wink (four assists) each had four point games, the first such game for Lorenzo.

Carter Whittemore played the first three quarters, making six saves to earn his first victory of the year.

The Colonels outshot the Giants 60-19 with 28 hitting the target compared to 11 for Keystone. Wilkes was successful in transition, converting 14 of 17 clears and picking up 44 groundballs while also forcing 29 turnovers.

The Colonels return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Rosemont College for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference contest.
