Misericordia Powers Past Wilkes Women’s Basketball 87-54

WILKES-BARRE – Catey McFadden scored a game high 13 points as the Wilkes University women’s basketball team lost 87-54 to visiting Misericordia University in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) game Saturday afternoon at the Marts Center.

Wilkes now stands at 4-19 overall and 0-12 against MAC Freedom competition. Misericordia moved to 15-8 overall and to 8-4 in the conference.

The Cougars jumped out to a 16-6 lead over the first 4:28 of the game but then the Lady Colonels connected on three-straight fast break layups to cut the lead to 16-12. Two of the sprint outs came from Emily Sofranko and the third from Sierra Smith. Misericordia then went on an 8-4 run to lead 24-16 at the end of the first quarter.

Wilkes began the first 2:03 of the second quarter on an 11-4 run to cut the Misericordia lead to one point at 28-27. Gianna Roberts made two layups to start the run and converted a free-throw on the second for a three-point play. McFadden and Jamie Campbell would then both drain three-pointers to finish the scoring run. The Cougars responded by going on an 18-8 run to end the quarter and led 45-36 at halftime.

McFadden led the way with hot shooting in the first two quarters for the Lady Colonels with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting including 2-of-3 from behind the arc.

Misericordia put the game out of reach by outscoring Wilkes 29-11 in the third quarter.

Roberts finished the day with nine points and seven rebounds. Nicole Farrell tied a career-high with eight rebounds and Chelsea Erkes set her career-high with five rebounds. McFadden added seven rebounds and Sofranko and Alyssa Alfano each scored seven points.

Quintessa Zamolyi led five Cougars in double figures with 11 points. Paige Wampole, Rachel Carmody, Brenna Karnish, and Emma Hayes all scored 10 points.

The Lady Colonels next take the court when they head across town to face King’s College at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday.
