WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University wrestling team hosted No. 3 Ithaca College Friday night in dual match action at the Marts Center, falling 40-3 as the Bombers scored seven extra-point victories.

Wilkes is now 10-14 in dual matches this season while Ithaca improved to 13-2.

Matthew Grossmann lost a hard fought match at 141-pounds to No. 4 ranked Ben Brisman. An escape point 12 seconds into the second round put Grossmann behind 2-1 in the bout and Grossmann followed that off by nicely fighting off a takedown attempt. Late in the third period Grossmann was awarded a stalling point just before Brisman scored a takedown to make the score 5-2. An additional riding time point gave Brisman the 6-2 decision and put the Bombers ahead 13-0 in the match after Ithaca picked up two tech fall victories at 125 and 133-pounds.

Josh Evans followed by putting the Colonels on the board with a 5-0 decision over Jawan Jones in the 149-pound bout. Evans was awarded a stalling point one minute into the second period and then went up 3-0 with a takedown with 12 seconds left in the period. Evans was awarded another stalling point with 30 seconds left in the third period and ended the bout with 2:01 of riding time for an additional point.

Bilal Bici used a takedown with 1:35 left in the first period of the 157-pound bout against No. 9 Austin Whitney to take a 3-2 lead. Whitney fought back with an escape and takedown to lead 5-4 at the end of the period. Bici tied the bout at eight with an escape with just over one minute left in the second period but Whitney’s late takedown in the period provided the winning points as he rode Bici out in the third period for an 11-8 decision. The Bombers led 16-3 at the halfway point of the match.

The Bombers used a tech fall and major decision in the 165 and 174-pound bouts and then Jake Ashcraft, the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 184-pounds, picked up the lone fall of the match to push the team score to 31-3. Ithaca closed the match with another major decision and its fourth tech fall to bring the final score to 40-3.

The Colonel grapplers are back on the mat Sunday for Senior Day at the Marts Center when they host King’s College at noon.
