Women's Basketball - Warriors’ comeback at Stevenson falls short

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – After erasing a 22-point first quarter deficit to take a third-quarter lead, the Lycoming College women’s basketball team couldn’t finish off the comeback win, falling 77-66 to Stevenson University in MAC Commonwealth action at Owings Mills Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 10.


The Warriors (16-6 overall, 10-4 MAC Commonwealth) now hold a one-game lead on third place in the MAC Commonwealth, setting up a showdown with fourth place Lebanon Valley (14-9 overall, 9-5 MAC Commonwealth) on Tuesday, Feb. 13, starting the Lamade Gym doubleheader at 6 p.m. before the men play at 8 p.m. If Lycoming wins, it would clinch a bye into the semifinals of the following week’s MAC Commonwealth Championship.

Senior Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) posted her 11th double-double of the season, notching 17 second-half points to go with 13 rebounds to lead a group of four Warriors in double figures. SophomoreMorgan Mader (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) finished with 16 points and four 3-pointers, sophomoreAkilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) added 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals and freshman Tori Talanca (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) added 11 points and a block.

After being down 31-9 at the end of the first quarter, the Warriors allowed just 18 points in the next two quarters while scoring 42 to take a 51-49 lead into the final period. Down by seven at the break, the Warriors scored the first 12 points of the second half, with Mueller posting a layup with 3:47 left to make it 44-39, but the Mustangs (14-10 overall, 8-7 MAC Commonwealth) cut the lead back to two by the end of the period.

In the fourth quarter, the teams’ fought to a tie at 60 with 6:30 left before the Mustangs went on a 7-1 run to make it 67-61 before Mueller notched a pair of free throws to make it 67-63 with 1:41 left. That was as close as Lycoming could get, though, as Stevenson closed the game with 10 straight points before Mader hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Stevenson pushed out to a 12-3 lead in the game’s first 3:30 and used a 13-1 run in the final 3:30 of the first quarter to take a 31-9 lead. In the second quarter, though, the Warriors responded, allowing Stevenson just two field goals while cutting into the deficit. Lycoming opened the quarter with a 13- 1 run in the period’s first five minutes, led by seven points from McFadden and six from Sipple during the run.

The Mustangs got the lead to 37-24 with 3:16 left in the second quarter, but the Warriors went on another 8-2 run to close the half, with a layup from Mader with 21 seconds left making it 39-32 at the break.

Brandi Hall led the Mustangs, who shot 42 percent from the field, with 13 points and three steals and Jonyae Curry added 12 points and five rebounds. Kristine Tennyson posted 11 points. Olivia Coleman added eight points, seven rebounds and five blocks. Stevenson had 16 steals, which led to 26 points.
