Wilkes Men’s Basketball Closes Regular Season with Last-Second Defeat on Senior Day

WILKES-BARRE – Eastern University’s Antonio Chapman hit a running three-pointer with 0.2 seconds showing on the clock to defeat the Wilkes University men’s basketball team by a 69-66 final at the Marts Center on Senior Day, closing out regular season Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play.

The Colonels end the regular season 18-7 overall and 11-3 in MAC Freedom play.

Wilkes led by as many as 10 points with 6:43 following a Rob Pecorelli three-pointer that made the score 56-46, but the Eagles finished the game on a 23-10 run.
Eastern started the game shooting well from beyond the arc, hitting four three-pointers over the first 5:24 of the game as it raced out to an 11-5 lead with 14:36 on the clock.
The Colonels fought back to close the initial period, outscoring the Eagles 29-22 as they entered halftime with a slim 34-33 advantage.
Wilkes began the second half on a 5-0 run as it jumped out to a 39-33 lead. The Colonels extended their lead to 10 at 50-40 following a Jack Bova three-pointer with 12:05 showing on the clock.
From that point, the Eagles chipped away at Wilkes’ lead until Chapman’s game-winner.
Pecorelli was the lone Colonel to finish in double figures, netting a game-high 22 points off the bench on 8-12 shooting from the field, including 6-8 from three-point, with two steals. Marcus Robinson and Mark Mullins each added nine points. Robinson added eight rebounds and six assists while Mullins contributed seven rebounds.
Chapman lead Eastern with 19 points, six rebounds, and three steals while Austin James finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
Wilkes returns to action next for the semifinals of the MAC Freedom tournament, where it will face Misericordia University at the Marts Center with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Colonels defeated the Cougars in both matchups this season, winning in Dallas 87-82 in an overtime thriller on January 24th before earning an 86-72 victory in Henry Gymnasium a week ago Saturday.
