Wilkes University men’s volleyball team - Smith, Schumacher Lead Colonels to Sweep at York (NY)

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The Wilkes University men’s volleyball team swept York College (NY) for the second time in the past 10 days in non-conference action Friday night. After picking up the home victory last Wednesday, the Colonels travelled to York College Gym and beat the Cardinals in straight sets (25-14, 25-11, 25-21).

Dylan Smith led the Colonels attack with a career-high 11 kills and Brian Schumacher joined him in double figures by tying his career-high of 10 kills.
Wilkes won for the third time in the past four matches and improved its overall record to 5-12 while York fell to 1-10.
The Colonels set the tone early in the first set by scoring the first four points. The Cardinals started the match with a service error and then Andrew Potter connected on an ace on the first Wilkes serve. Smith and Schumacher then recorded back-to-back kills. York would battle back to tie the score at eight but the Colonels scored the next five points including an ace from Cole Hefner and a kill from Schumacher. Wilkes then had runs of six and four points to continue to extend its lead until winning the opening set 25-14.
York trailed 8-7 in the second set before Wilkes closed on a 17-4 run to take the set 25-11. Daniel Sales connected on a kill and Hefner provided an ace in the key four-point run to extend the lead to five points.
The Cardinals jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the third set but the Colonels would strike for six consecutive points to tie the score including four-straight aces from Sales and a kill by Brian Vu. York settled in and led 19-18 before Wilkes scored five-straight points to take a 23-19 lead. In the decisive run Smith and Hefner had kills, Joseph Gayton recorded an ace, and Hefner and Sales combined for a block. Sales would then connect on two kills to close out the set at 25-21 and give the Colonels the 3-0 match win.
Sales finished with a season-high 22 assists and six aces. Schumacher hit a team-best .471 and had a career-high three aces. Gayton’s career-high of four digs was tied with Sales for the team lead.
As a team, Wilkes tied its season-high of 15 aces that it set in the first meeting with York.
The Colonels return to the Marts Center to host their final tri-match of the season on Sunday. Wilkes will face New Jersey City University in the first match at 11:00 a.m. before closing the day with a match against Keuka College at approximately 3:00 p.m.
