The following is a Wilkes University sports update for Saturday February 3, 2018:

Manhattanville pours in 45 in the Second Half to Snap Wilkes Men's Basketball Streak

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Entering halftime with a 35-28 lead, the Wilkes University basketball team was outscored 45-28 in the second half as Manhattanville College snapped the Colonels' five game win streak by a 73-63 final on Saturday evening.

Wilkes fell to 15-6 overall and 8-2 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play.

The Valiants secured the first extended lead, jumping out to a 6-2 advantage through the initial 85 seconds.

After Manhattanville reached a five point advantage at 11-6, the Colonels battled back to tie the score at 13 with 14:04 on the clock, taking their first lead after a Marcus Robinson three pointer at the 13:02 mark to make the score 16-13. That bucket was in the middle of a 12-0 run that saw Wilkes reach a 21-13 lead that lasted until the 11:46 point following a Rob Pecorelli three-pointer.

The Valiants battled back to take a 26-23 lead after a 13-2 run that was ended after Robinson hit another three with 3:43 until halftime. The Colonels finished the half on a 12-0 run as they entered half with a seven point advantage.

Wilkes started the second half on a 5-2 run to reach a 40-30 lead with 19:22 lead following a Mark Mullins layup and following free-throw, nut Manhattanville closed the gap with a 14-4 run to tie the game at 44 with 15:32 remaining. The Colonels commenced a 6-0 run to regain the lead at 50-44 after a Mason Gross layup, but were unable to put the game away.

Wilkes remained ahead with a 58-54 lead and 8:43 on the clock, but the Valiants finished the game outscoring the Colonels 19-5 to take the contest.

Mullins led Wilkes with 22 points to go with five rebounds. Robinson added 15 points and three steals while Pecorelli finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Shawn Smith paced Manhattanville with a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds while Jojo Cobbs contributed 18 points and three assists.

The Colonels return to the court on Wednesday when it heads to Center Valley for a showdown with DeSales, which is the only remaining team with two losses in conference other than Wilkes. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

Wilkes Men’s Volleyball Defeated at Stevenson in Inaugural MAC Match

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Wilkes University men’s volleyball team competed in its inaugural Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) match Saturday afternoon at Stevenson University, falling in straight sets (25-12, 25-14, 25-14).

Wilkes is now 2-6 overall and 0-1 in the MAC while Stevenson moved to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

The Mustangs opened the first set with the first six points before Dylan Smith and Daniel Sales recorded consecutive kills. The Colonels never could string together more than two points in a row as Stevenson pulled away to a 25-12 victory.

The Colonels recorded their only three-point run of the match in the second set with a kill from Jones Mensah and two Stevenson errors but the Mustangs won the set 25-14.

A Smith kill brought the third set score to 8-4 but Wilkes was unable to build any momentum and Stevenson mirrored the second set final score at 25-14 and took the match 3-0.

Sales led the way with eight kills and also had seven assists and seven digs. Smith was second on the team with six kills and Kyle Price tied Sales for the team-lead with seven digs. Salvatore Purpura had a team-high 11 assists and added three digs.

Landon Shorts led the Mustangs offense with 13 kills and Jared Chin had 29 assists. Derek Tangorra led the defense with 10 digs.

The Colonels will host their first MAC game Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when they welcome Messiah College to the Marts Center.

Wilkes Women's Swimming Drops Season's Final Dual Meet to King's

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's swimming team hosted King's College in its final dual meet of the season Saturday afternoon at the Wyoming Valley CYC. The Lady Colonels had a trio of swimmers and a relay place second while the Lady Monarchs left with the 155-37 team score victory.

The 200 Medley Relay team of Abby Keating, Kyleigh Smeltzer, Allie Aspey, and Morgan Williams finished second with a time of 2:01.71.

Keating also placed second in two individual events as she finished the 200 IM in 2:26.89 and the 100 Backstroke in 1:08.41.

Aspey was second in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:08.65.

Julia Rostron swam to a second place finish in 1:18.42 in the 100 Breaststroke and in the same event Smeltzerfinished third in 1:19.28.

Williams had a pair of third place finishes. First in the 200 Freestyle she finished in 2:12.29 and then in the 100 Freestyle she came in at 1:03.09.

The Lady Colonels are 2-11 overall and 0-8 in Middle Atlantic Conference meets. King's improved to 7-4 overall and to 5-3 in conference meets.

Wilkes returns to the pool for competition in the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships at the Graham Aquatics Center in York, Pa. from February 15-18.

Wilkes Men’s Swimming Ends Regular Season at Home against King’s

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men’s swimming team completed the 2018 regular season with a dual match against King’s College at the Wyoming Valley CYC, but was defeated 130-68 on Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels finish the campaign with a 7-7 record. The seven wins set a new program record, and tie the amount of wins the program had in its first three years of the rebirth combined.

The relay team of Nick Martino, Anthony Stampone, Justin Burda, and Jared Byrne started the day with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.49. The team of Burda, Tyler Weatherby, Stampone, and Martino finished second in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing in 1:34.87.

Byrne earned two event wins, finishing first in the 200 freestyle (1:49.34) and the 100 freestyle (50.05).

Stampone finished second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.53.

Burda was second in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 55.70.

Martino came in second in the 100 backstroke at 59.91.

Mike Pettit finished second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:23.85 and fourth in the 100 freestyle at 54.46.

Wilkes returns to action in less than two weeks when it heads to the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships in York, Pa. which begin Thursday, February 15th at 6:00 p.m.

Wilkes Women’s Basketball Falls to Manhattanville’s Late Push

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Chelsea Erkes scored a career-high 13 points and the Wilkes University women’s basketball team trailed by six points heading to the fourth quarter before Manhattanville College pulled away for a 63-45 victory in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action Saturday afternoon.

Wilkes dropped to 4-17 overall and 0-10 in the MAC Freedom. Manhattanville improved its record to 16-4 and 6-3 in the conference.

The Lady Colonels gained the early advantage in the game, leading 7-2 with 4:19 left in the first quarter. Gianna Roberts opened the Wilkes scoring with a layup to tie the game and then Emily Sofranko sank two from the charity stripe and Roberts connected on a three-pointer to build the lead. Catey McFadden was good on a layup and Sofranko added a free-throw to make the score 10-5 in favor of the Lady Colonels. The Valiants closed with the final four points of the first quarter but Wilkes held a 10-9 lead.

Manhattanville scored the first six points of the second quarter to go on a 10-0 run in all to take the 15-10 lead before Alyssa Alfano made a layup with 6:57 left until halftime. Erkes would connect on a trey to pull Wilkes within two points at 17-15 before the Valiants finished the second quarter on a 9-4 run to lead 26-19 at the break. Roberts, Sofranko, and Erkes each had five points for the Lady Colonels in the first half.

Alfano made good on two free-throws and Maddie Kelley drained a three-pointer as Wilkes drew within two points again at 26-24 with 7:44 left in the third quarter. Twice Manhattanville opened its lead back to eight points but Erkes connected with a three each time to keep Wilkes squarely in contention and Alfano made two from the foul line with two seconds left in the third quarter to make the score 41-35 heading to the final 10 minutes. Erkes totaled eight of the Lady Colonels 16 points in the quarter.

A Manhattanville free-throw with 6:24 left in the game put the Valiants ahead by double digits for the first time at 47-37. Kelley’s second make from behind the arc brought the score back to single digits at 50-41 with 3:20 left but the Valiants answered with the next 10 points including eight from Spencer Shore to put the game away with a 60-41 lead with 1:09 remaining.

Alfano led the Lady Colonels with a career-high 12 rebounds and also scored eight points. Kelley finished second on the team with nine points and Roberts had five points and six rebounds.

Shore’s 14 points led the way for Manhattanville and Kymane Jones and Kayleah McGuire joined her in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively.

The Lady Colonels remain on the road for their next MAC Freedom contest in Center Valley, Pa. against DeSales University Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
