WILKES-BARRE – On a day when the Wilkes University wrestling team recognized its five seniors the Colonels turned in a dominating performance to defeat King’s College 44-6 at the Marts Center Sunday afternoon. Before the match began Jake Dimarsico, Matthew Grossmann, Josh Evans, Bilal Bici, and Morgan Fuller were introduced to the crowd for their accomplishments during their time with the Wilkes wrestling program.

Wilkes improved to 11-14 in dual matches with the victory while King’s fell to 1-21.

The Colonels began the match with two forfeit wins at 125 and 133-pound. Kyle Trout and Dimarsico were awarded the victories at the respective weight classes.

In the first bout of the day Grossmann had an early takedown against Jake Taylor at 141-pounds but Taylor escaped late in the first period to trail 2-1. The score held heading into the third period when Grossmann picked up an escape point 13 seconds in to increase his lead to 3-1. Just before the final horn Grossmann scored two points on a takedown and was awarded the riding time point as well to take the match by a 6-1 final and increase the Colonels team lead to 15-0.

Evans then picked up a third forfeit win for Wilkes at 149-pounds.

Bici gained the early lead in the 157-pound bout with a takedown of David White at the 42 second mark. White picked up an escape point with 1:12 left in the first period and the bout headed into the second period with Bici ahead 2-1. Bici then rode White the entire second period to bring his riding time total to 3:03. White allowed a free release to give Bici the 3-1 lead at the start of the third period looking for a takedown to start a comeback. He made good on that with an escape with 36 seconds left to tie the score at three. Since White was trailing in riding time he immediately let Bici escape. Bici was then hit with a stalling violation to tie the score at four with eight seconds left but he did not allow Price to take him down and won the bout on the strength of the riding time point for a 5-4 decision victory.

Ashton Gyenizs picked up the first pin of the match against Darren Marte at the 1:25 mark of the 165-pound bout and John Ritter followed with another fall in the 174-pound bout against Sean Floto in 58 seconds to make the score 36-0.

Matthew Judge won with a second-period technical fall in 3:46 over Anthony Harmon-Miller in the 184-pound bout. He accumulated a 17-0 score with two takedowns, three four-point near-falls, and a riding time point.

Nasser McCummings earned a hard fought 8-5 decision in the 197-pound bout against Nick Price. McCummings scored on a takedown 20 seconds into the first period and an escape with 1:05 left to lead 3-2 after one.

He earned another takedown 1:05 into the second period to lead 5-3 before surrendering a late escape to Price to bring the score to 5-4 heading into the third. An escape 22 seconds into the final period and then a takedown with 54 seconds left put McCummings ahead 8-4.

The Monarchs picked up a fall in the heavyweight bout with Ralph Bernado nailing down the second-period pin in a time of 4:40 to yield the final team score of 44-6 in favor of the Colonels.

Next up on the schedule for the Colonels is the Cross County Challenge on Friday and Saturday. Wilkes will wrestle the University of Scranton at 7:00 p.m. Friday night at King’s College before heading to Scranton’s campus to face Keystone College at noon on Saturday.
