Women's Basketball - Lycoming College Warriors fall to Lions

READING, Pa. – Senior Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) continued to make her case to become the Lycoming College women’s basketball team’s first MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year, posting 23 points and 10 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season, but Albright College was able to use a strong second-quarter to hold on for a 62-57 conference win in the regular-season finale at the Bollman Center on Saturday, Feb. 17.

Mueller finished the regular season leading the MAC Commonwealth with 15.3 points per game, 12 double-doubles and an .851 free throw percentage. She is also second in rebounding (10.0), third in field goal percentage (.482), fifth in blocked shots (1.4) and 11th in steals (1.7). She is the first Warrior in 23 years to average a double-double during a season.

The Warriors finish the regular-season with a 17-7 overall record, tied for the second-most wins in program history, and an 11-5 MAC Commonwealth record, tied for the most in program history. They enter the postseason with the MAC Commonwealth Championship as the No. 3 seed, heading to the No. 2 seed, which is most likely Albright, on Wednesday night, Feb. 20.

Mueller hit 8-of-11 from the field and 7-of-9 at the free throw line in her fifth 20-point game of the season, while she grabbed nine of her 10 rebounds on the defensive end, as Lycoming posted a 35-30 lead on the glass. Freshman Erica Lutz (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) added 10 points, six rebounds and two steals.

Albright (19-6 overall, 14-2 MAC Commonwealth) shot 41 percent from the floor, including 48 percent in the first half. Five players finished in double figures, led by 13 points and three assists from Alysha Lofton and 12 points a piece from MiKayla Lea and Nina Mazzerelli.

The Warriors and Lions fought through two ties and a lead change in the opening minutes before Albright used an 8-2 run to take a 16-9 lead with 3:00 left in the first quarter. Lycoming cut the lead down to two at the end of the period, but midway through the second quarter, Albright used a 16-6 run to take a 37-23 lead before Lycoming used a pair of jumpers to cut the lead to 10 at the break at 37-27.

Albright scored the first five points of the third quarter, but Lycoming responded with a run of 10 straight points, the last four from Mueller to make it 42-37 with 3:32 left. Albright was able to get the lead to nine points at the end of the period, 48-39. In the fourth, Albright got the lead to 12 early in the period, but Lycoming fought back to within five with 2:50 left after a pair of free throws from Mueller. That was as close as Lycoming could get though.

Sophomore Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) added six points and two assists and freshman Tori Talanca (Berwick, Pa./Cerwick Area) added five points and two assists. Senior Hailey Fricke (Denver, Pa./Garden Spot) added five points.
